I've just taken a peek, and at 13:30, the Vit is still open for entries.... Outlaw still has places.... IM events across Europe not selling out.... in recent previous years this would have been unthinkable
Has the 'going long' gold rush ended?
lets be honest.... its all prep for an Ironman on my 100th birthday
Perhaps there is still the same level of interest (or maybe even a greater level of interest) but as there are many more events out there now than even 4 years ago, the market is spread more thinly?
You could well be right there Dave.... I was going to enter the Vit as an 'end of season' bit of fun, but decided that, at £130, it was just too expensive for something that wasn't a key target for the season.

to be fair, the Vit has 50% sold out and it's not long opened - that's not uncommon with the Vit and it will sell out in a couple more weeks.
there are more events around these days competing for money and many experienced IM have either - like me and DtS - retired, or wanting something "different" viz. swim/runs like Otillo, ultras (even there it's becoming more extreme), or a completely different sporting challenge.
you also need to remember that many around here have got a few t-shirts so the gloss has gone, but there are plenty of newbies out there looking for their challenge hence the number of events. tri is still growing strongly as a sport and as a ref I see a load of newbies popping up at events.
Yep, , very healthy you only have to see the numbers we attract in Chester,
when I first started spending time in The Lakes as far as Tri clubs went it was just Aragorns Penrith, then a couple of years back we got TriLakeland over in Cockermouth, as of this year we now have Keswick Tri Club.
Remember when 'The Longest Day' was the one and only UK Iron distance event? What was it, a tenner to enter (by post). Single wave start of a couple of hundred souls. For some going long becomes a way of life, even an obsession, for many once it's done it's done, then there are the old prats like me who did it in the past and, like pulling girls, still want to know of they can!

Nope, just getting to expensive for the entries

maybe its because Sgt Lard isn't entering everything these days?
Lol

How much have events gone up by?
So lots of new events, ( most of them cheaper than the established) and IM doing its best to fleece competitors...
i know I've retired, but transition for next years Lakesman is only a 5 minute walk from home, but it's only 260 quid
