Never or very occasionally would probably be the best answer, but I have read one of the worst things to do is finish a club run, shower and be downing a pint of Guiness within 20 mins.
Apparently this is the time the mitochondria you have stimulated during the run are developing and the alcohol kills them.
So is there an optimum time where the majority of adaptation is done and it is less damaging to refortify the iron reserves:)?

I was just celebrating (with a glass or two) the recently published research that showed how heavy-drinking women outlived the moderate drinkers.
Never mind. I'll just have to be more selective about WHEN I overindulge (purely for health reasons, of course).
Purely for my health too!
That bottle of Spitfire Ale is saying `drink me'
Cheers
Alcohol wont effect the mitochondria but will divert their use from CHO to fat and that is not so efficient. I'm happy to have a drink and accept a slightly less efficient restoration of my muscle glycogen.
Hope I'm corrected by any knowledgeable biochemists.

Can anyone clarify or comment on this??
It seems to make you feel sh*te for the rest of the week! ('scuse the language)
:0)
Just did a few 300's down at track with the sprint group tonight. Got BUSA's XC in two days. Still did em quick but i cant jog properly because of a nasty wound on my heel. Coach said i can get some 'liquid skin' from boots, Deadly serious! is he avin a giraffe, im gonna walk in and ask the lady for some 'liquid skin'!!!!
You been running without socks perhaps?
Me..lager or cider, I'm not fussy. I've discovered some fab Biddendens cider (8.4%) which is best drunk in half pints, believe me. A class above commercial ciders. Never the night before a race though!
