Beginners aches and pains.

I recently started running again after a lifestyle overhaul last year (i.e after an incredibly painful episode of gout in August).

A few weeks ago, I could barely run a mile, but after 3 weeks I was able (not exactly comfortably mind) to run 3.5 miles.

Following this, I experienced knee pain, on the inside of my patella on both knees, and then after a couple of days off, I've been barely able to run a mile due to a really heavy ache at the very bottom of my shins / front of ankle.

Any suggestions on how to relieve this, I don't want to become disheartened because I was really starting to enjoy running and was noticing the difference.

I know you don't think you are rushing it but the couch to 5k takes 8 weeks for a reason, it does take your body a while to adapt.  Yes you can do it a lot quicker but you will get more aches n pains image

Are you wearing appropriate trainers image Also if you can try to run on softer ground.

Don't try to run hard, don't run as if you are doing the 100m and racing against Bolt you are just getting your body used to it, speed is irrelevant at this stage it's just getting out there consistently so run very gently almost using a slow motion movement.

when you go out next take it really, really steady and see how it goes.  Don't think speed concentrate on your body don't wear headphones, just try and run light and gently and slowly, if you feel your feet are slapping down take shorter strides and just try to almost float along.. I know it sounds a bit wishy washy and vague, but try just going slow gentle and controlled, don't breath hard, take it easy you should be able talk to your imaginary friend easily without being out of puff. image

Thanks for the response, I think that I probably did too much too soon, however, it felt right at the time. My right knee has been quite painful, particularly when going downstairs this morning.

I have done a few 10kms in the past, although not for 4 years, and I have to pass an annual fitness test in work, so whilst I'm about a stone overweight, I didn't think I was this unfit! I'm wearing a pair of Asics which I bought from a specialist running shop a couple of years ago  (which admittedly haven't seen much action).

Guess I need to rest my knee a bit more, I've ordered a support, so I'll see if that helps. I want to be in a position to complete the Great Manchester Run on the 22nd May.

Apparently even if your running shoes haven't seen much use, the cushion hardens over time just sitting in a cupboard. A specialist at Run & Become told me this last week.
