Hello,
I currently run 2-3 times a week. Typically I run two 2-4 mile runs and one slightly longer 6-8 mile run.
I am now taking swimming lessons on the same day as the short run (I help out at the local run club so can't move the days)
I cycle once a week 8-12 miles at Z3-Z4 effort.
I want to add more cycling and swimming in but want to know whether I should dial down on the running? maybe drop a run and replace it with a cycle or similar.
Comments
I should probably add the following:
I have done 2x Half Marathons and 2x 10k's within past few months.
I am looking to do a Sprint Triathlon (400/20k/5k)
I don't think I will struggle (too much) with the run but haven't really done any brick sessions to prove that theory
Hi
I would say you can build up to 2-3 of each of the 3 sports per week
here's an example beginners plan - there are a few plans on the linked site
http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/training-plans-view.asp?planid=416
Thank you ..
The problem I find with a lot of beginner plans is they assume all three disciplines at zero or next to zero.
For example that linked one assums 8 mins of running ability.
I imagine most people who come to Tri's are coming from one discipline already and therefore one requires less development than the other areas.
Hi
Look on the list of plans
http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/trainingplans-list.asp
They have plans for varying entry levels
probably true....
however, don't make the mistake of seeing triathlon as 3 distinct sports.... running after a fast swim and a hard bike leg is VERY different from standalone!
but, you are probably right in thinking that you can dial back a bit on the running, and do more bike and swim work.... but don't go too far the other way....
your understanding of training strategies will help a lot, and can be carried over into the bike easily with a little research... eg intervals are very similar, as are speed and strength sessions...
You can always get a pool ,,, swim any time
Your shed is bigger than my garden - let alone the Pool
May sound silly - are they bungee cords on your legs?
Yes its a type of bungee cord, with clips - called a swim tether - you hardly notice them after the first 5mins or so
I'd certainly switch one of your runs to be after the bike so you experience running on already tired legs. If you struggle for time you'd get a turbo trainer pretty cheap to set your bike up on especially off gumtree or ebay.
I looked at Turbo Trainers but there would be "resistance" at home
