Marathon Training and Injury

I am due to be running the London marathon this year for the first time ever! However, I was very frustrated to find out that I had damaged my LCL in my knee. Went to see the doctor just over two weeks ago and have abstained from exercise since. I can definitely feel the pain having reduced since. Used to be very painful just walking and bending the knee. Currently I am able to walk up stairs with no pain until around maybe 20 minutes or so afterwards where it will hurt to extend my knee a little bit.

I have two main queries with this injury. Firstly, has anyone else experienced this injury - and if so, what can I do to improve my recovery time? Secondly, as I've never experienced this kind of injury before, and not completely aware of how long it will take to be able to get back into full training again, I am unsure whether to keep my place for this year or to defer to next year?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Just incase this helps, I'm at 20 year old male that exercises regularly
