Pain in outside of ankle

Hi there, I wondered if anyone can help. I have been running for 2 months, doing around 20-25 miles per week. Some full run, some walk run.

Last week I got a really bad pain on the outside of my ankle where the peronial tendon is. It came on a little after the run and the next day I couldn't really bare any weight on it. It eased off the next day and then over the last 3 days has been there but not agonising. I can walk on it but certainly couldn't run.

My question is, could this be peronial tendinitis or more likely to be a sprain? I ran on slightly uneven ground for part of my run before it happened but only probably for 2-3 mins before going back onto the road.

I have purchased new shoes after this happened in case this is the problem and likely that my current shoes, although new, were not suitable for my feet and I have been known to heel strike.

I have been doing stretches and some strengthening exersizes but as a new runner, I am worried this is going to stop me dead in my tracks and the fitness I've built up will be lost and I will be starting all over again.

I have a GP appointment later this week but I felt maybe runners may have a better idea as likely I will just be told I have sprained my ankle.

Any advise would be much appreciated. Also, not sure if it matters but the base of my heel has a dull pain to :(

Sounds like peroneals. Do yourself a favour and book an appointment with a sports physio. GPs usually prescribe rest and ibuprofen, although you may be lucky and get an enlightened one who will refer you to a specialist. That will take time, though. If you want to get back running sooner rather than later, pay for a sports physio - they will treat it and give you exercises to do that will help. (Incidentally, the new Runners World has a bunch of exercises aimed at different troublesome bits, including the peroneals).
