I ran the Great North last year which was my first race.
I entered for the Blackpool marathon which will be on June 20th.
I have been plagued with tonsilitis, ear infections and sinusistis over the winter and have not trained much.
At the beginning of April I started training properly. Last week I ran 15 miles and it was not a pleasant experience.
I have one month to add 11 miles - it is beginning to dawn on me that I may not do it. Should I give in gracefully and concentrate on a good time in the Great North this year instead. Or should I keep adding more miles?
Help!
Thanks

youve done more than i did for my first marathon
depends what you want to achieve
you CAN finish, but it will be hell
how important is it to do this marshon
are you bothered about time
Just feel like a wimp even considering deferring my first marathon.

as long as it doesnt put you off doing another marathon, why dont you run as long as you can, then walk
if you arent prepared to walk, then pull out now
do it.
There must be no compromise.
Compromise is the language of the Devil.
For what it's worth, the most enjoyable marathon I did was on the back of a lamentable lack of training, as I just took it easy (and it's still my 4th best time). I tend to find I get pretty fit after 6 weeks of reasonably serious training, and after that further improvements are quite small.
You dont really have a month of mileage increases.- An absolute minimum of 2 week taper ( and the vast majority of people seem to think 3) means that you only have a week or two of increasing long runs.- As hippo says, you could still finish, but you probably wouldn't enjoy it much!
My mileage for last 12 weeks (per week - most recent last).

White Peak Marathon this Saturday.
Do it - what have you got to lose?
Set off easy.
There's two sorts of people in the world - those who've run marathons and those who haven't.
You may never be this fit again. You'll regret it if you don't do it.
do it is what i would say
theres always another marathon
and they are fantastic learning experiences
Thanks for all your advice. All views agreed with.
This is what I have decided to do. Run the half in a good time. My GNR time was 2hours 12minutes (partly because I started at an honest starting time, rather than getting in front of those who started to walk after 1 mile!) I think it would be a more enjoyable experience, still a personal challenge, and I would finish the race feeling as fab as I did last time.
My other decision is to find a marathon later in the year that I can aim for - and get on with it!
Thanks for all your help. I run in isolation and with no experience, and my last run was enough to make me take up crochet.
NOW I feel like running again!!
