Nobody has a filthier house than I have, Benz. I adore the hygiene hypothesis for atopic disorders. And it's got to be correct, because none of my kids has asthma or eczema...well, if it was an alternative health product rather than cheap old grime, that would count as "proof"!

Can't get away from being slandered in this place, can I? When did I ever say that I don't drink? Come on! All things in moderation! DD, where are you, you can vouch for me sinking the odd half-pint! It's just that I'm not that interested in booze and life's too short to nurse a hangover. I probably drink less in a year now than I did in a week as a student.

Bune, I'm sure I am the only person qualified to say that Quentin Crisp was fibbing - it does!

I just don't notice it. One day I'm going to tap a line of tacks into the high shelves and the tops of door frames so that when the grannies check them for dust they'll end up trying not to tell me why they're sucking their fingers.

Medical books are just as bad. And can I persuade my students that the reason we make them sit for hours learning to critique research papers is that we want them to USE research papers? I hate having to tear strips off them for regurgitating ancient stuff from textbooks, especially when they turn big doe-eyes upon me and say, "But it was the latest edition, it was published in 1999". But if that's what it takes to make the blighters learn...
