The first thing I thought when I discovered that London was getting the Olympics was "How do we get an Ultra event into the schedule?" I know it's been tried before but what an opportunity...
The arguments against will go something along the lines of:
1)It would overshadow the Marathon and the 50k walk
2)There are too many events already.
I have absolutely no idea who decides what events are in or what rules there are governing that decision but I intend to find out. Our sport is all about perseverance and sheer determination. Let's use some of that to wear down the opposition.
If anybody does have any useful info, further possible objections or some good counter arguments then let's hear them.
Right, where's Coe's phone number gone?...

i'm going to write to express supports for the darts bid to get in there.
I wouldn't hold out too much hope though.
They added BMX for Beijing, but then had to remove two of the track cycling events.
So which athletic events would you want removed.
The height of those barriers is a joke. THey are about 2 foot high.
I think they do need a longer race, marathons are a bit short and easy:)
Too right I'm up for an Olympic Ultra even if I will be about 56 years old by then.
As it's a sort of winter sport we could even have it in the Winter Olympics. This'd give a chance for athletes to go for medals in both winter and summer games.
Ultra for London!
XC would have to be flat snow & hills (for XC) don't mix well.
The maximum number of events allowed at an Olympic Games is 301 (which should remain the only connection between the Olympics and Darts)
Now here's the best bit_all events for the Summer Games have to be recognised by one of 28 approved federations, the IAAF being the one that looks after running. And Guess what: in 1991 the IAAF recognised the 100km race. Hoorah say I!
You don't have to lose an event from the same sport if you add a new one. It's just the total number of events in the Games that is limited to 301. I'm getting really into this...
To sum up_Cross Country is a summer games possibility as is 100km. No other ultra races are currently IAAF approved. I wonder if we could have a 100km cross country to keep everyone happy?
There used to be an Olympic cross country run didn't there?
Did anyone notice Yiannis Kouros was the starter for the Athens Olympic marathon?
Did you see the 47 year old Isreali in the men's marathon at Athens_he came about 20th but I can't remember his name.
Could be an urban adventure race?
