How do I know if I pronate.

I have just started running and vary between treadmill and road running. I also do other CV work in the gym.
I need a new pair of trainers and was wondering whether theres an easy way of knowing if I over/under pronate. If it helps my trainers wear out faster on the outside heel.
Also, are there any good specialist running shoe stores in Cardiff?
Any help would be good. Cheers.

Hi Dr B: try Run and Become - I think they're very close to Cardiff station and that space age stadium thingy you've got.

Have you tried Sweatshop. They have addidas running machines which tell you what kind of runner you are and from there they will recomend the best shoes for you, (not just Addidas), in fact when i went on the machine in Covent Garden I was recomended to wear Saucony or Ascics.

    Dr Brainz,

Run and Become is the only specialist running shop in Cardiff. they regularlytrouser my money and they give good advice as well. If you are prepared to travel try Sweatshop in Bristol, they've got a foot scan thingy that analyses your foot strike and tells you what sort of shoes you should buy. Unfortunately, they never have the right type in your size so you end up going back to Run and Become. take your old trainers tyo Run and Become with you (as long as they don't smell too bad).

    good luck, DB.

Incidentally, if you belong to a running club they give you 10% off.

For about 12 years I'd been sceptical of those that protested to be able to tell what shoes would suit you, just by watching you run along the pavement (I'd had a propper job done at the London Marathon exhibition where they filmed me on a treadmill) and until a few weeks ago I'd never been to R&B.

My wife treated me to the experience and it was superb.

Diagnosed (again, just as I was at Olympia) as a fairly neutral mild overpronator,I was
recommended to go for the Asics 1080's, which were on offer but opted for Saucony Nemisis for a fiver more as they were a slightly more spongie ride.

The best advice I've ever heeded in regard to running..

JUST DO IT............... You'll not regret it.

Thanx guys. I have taken your advice and went to R&B on weekend. Spoke to a very friendly and clued up lady, had me running up and down the road with turn-ups in my jeans. She said I over-pronate a bit. I left with a pair of Asics Gel 1080's, took them for a quick spin on sunday and I am very happy. Thanx again.
