I've picked up a hip injury through doing too much too quickly in training. I've had it before and I'll have to rest for at least 1 week - 10 days before running again. Is there any way I can stay more or less on schedule by doing something else in that time, e.g. swimming or cycling ?

Try some cycling on stationary bikes, that way you can mimic some speed sessions. Not sure how that would affect your hip so take it easy.
