Bravo TR, sounds like you exceeded the Ryanair baggage allowance with all those belts and layers!  Excellent and consistent splits for a comfy sub 3, just reward for your hard training.
Hope you get to enjoy a beer or three later. 1st V55 too duly noted.

OO.. local forecast said Valencia wasn't quite as warm as it is here, about 11 degrees at the start and 15-17 at lunchtime.  I'm very likely to enter next year as Mrs Wardi is keen to go again, no negotiations required!

SJ.. well toughed out in that fell race, definitely a specialist discipline.  Congrats on your good year too, you've posted a few good results.

Thanks Wardi. Quads have taken their usual kicking. I reckon I need to do more squats.

Congrats TR on the AG top step!

I note Sinead Diver took the womens Aussie record down at Valencia. The Irish claiming it too of course. The Aussies on the podcast will be 'up and about' that's for sure.

I gather Valencia is already super popular but these fast times are only going to increase demand. Is it especially difficult to get into? What are the logistics like for entry? Ballot etc?
  • Options
    WardiWardi ✭✭✭
SJ.. as I remember it's first come first served and cheaper if you get your entry in early.  Sign up to their FB page for news & updates.
When me, OO, TT, DanA & JoeB did it in 2017 it was fairly easy to enter.  Popularity has increased significantly since then.
I flew to Alicante and got the train to Valencia from there. 👍
  • Options
SJ - Not difficult, at some stage this week, go onto their site and they will start to release entries and its first come first served at different price points.  When Wardi/ TT and I ran it, the marathon had around 12,000 runners its now grown to around 30,000.  I also intend to enter in 2023 - anyothers on the thread interested, make it a run in the sun meet-up.

Cheers folks, happy to get a sub3 on the board for the year. Feel pretty good today, so probably had a bit more to give. Didn't really know how fit or healthy i was though.

I would have rather been at Valencia yday. It looks like its a bit big now though, with nearly 4000 going sub3, makes it a busy run, London is bad enough......Katie ran well again.

SJ - Sinead nearly beat Brady.
  • Options
TR - fan-bloody-tastic! Well done. I'm delighted to see you get a well-deserved roi! Brucey bonus with 1st AG too - congrats!

Jools - weather here has been similar. I got into work the other day pretty soaked, despite no rain, just from the fog.

Jooligan - sorry to read you're struggling post covid. Hopefully things pick up soon.

    Wardi - nice running temps!

sj - positive year there. Well done. As OO and Wardi have said Valencia is pretty easy to get into. It's definitely one I'd go back to again (though probably not next year as I've got other potential plans).

Ended up with 80 last week, though with a longest run of 10m which is something I need to address. This week will most likely be less as I've got other things vying for my time.

TT - 80 is a lot with nothing over 10, good work.

The mile splits varied a little depending upon where you were on the airfield on Sunday, but gadget shows i did 10m av 6.46, 10m av 6.45, 6m av 6.46 and then 0.3m av 6.29.

Nicely even there TR. Perfectly managed given expectations going in. Knowing the mileage you put in I imagine your steely legs are doing ok today? I've actually not been following the pod for a few months so didn't know Brady was running too. I'll listen to this weeks to catch up.

A solid week with no long run TT and a week of lower volume won't hurt.

Thanks all for Valencia Intel. I'll keep an eye out for the announcement. I think I might just get it in the diary so it forces me to actually do an overseas race. It would be great for an end of year thread meetup as OO suggests.

7.5 miles before work this morning. Amazing sunrise that was fabulous for 5 minutes until I then couldn't see a thing for 20 mins until I turned back.

Run before work is the way forward re the commute. Cuts both journey in and out to one hour door to door. Makes for a long day but at least I don't have to run when I get home in these darker months.

TT.. if you totted up 80m with shortish runs I guess your laundry basket was quite full. 😏  Good mileage nonetheless.

TR.. great consistency during the race,  good to see you had enough left near the end to finish with a flourish.

SJ/OO.. getting to Valencia via Alicante.  Once out of Alicante Airport turn right and head down to the bus stand at the end of the concourse.  Bus C6 drives down to Alicante and loops around the city - including a stop at the railway station.  Trains to Valencia run fairly regularly and can be pre booked.

8.5m today, definitely a nip in the air but tomorrow looks colder so decided to enjoy it while I could.

SJ - i sometimes used to drive to work and run immediately i got there. Valencia sounds good but the high on 4000 going sub3 puts me off.......legs are ok, I could probably run today, but will wait to Thursday. Av HR was a bit lower than usual which makes me think i had some in reserve, but the temperature might have affected that. Defo think i was sub 255 fit in Sept, hopefully I can get that back by April.

Wardi - going to get icy for running, but we won't be getting rained on!

TT - That is good going especially with no long runs.  Plenty of decent doubles.

TR - Admirable pacing and with everything that went on beforehand, running with some in hand the right strategy.  Btw, your last run at Goodwood was a sub 3 as well as the convention is to round up times to the nearest full second, so a time of 2.59.59.01 would be rounded up to 3.00.

SJ - Run commute is the way to go and todays sounds fab.

Valencia - In 2017 and feedback from my clubmates from Sunday said it was congested for the first few miles as the streets are relatively narrow, but then spread out as the roads widened.  Looking at their web last year they started releasing slots from December 14th.  Thanks Wardi, can reach Alicante from Newquay and currently the schedule is decent!

45m last week but nothing so far this as afflicted by CV again.  Getting better now so might go for a very light and easy jog of a few miles tomorrow. Wife has it too. My 12 year old the source again!!!

There seems to be a lot more Covid about again.  We've had a cluster in our office.  I'm waiting anxiously to see how I feel, as I popped in on Monday after a hearing and spoke to someone who tested positive that evening...!!

There's loads of CV about again, fortunately the jabs allow life to continue, places with poor jab uptake/roll out still struggle. I do worry about passing it on to oldies though.

OO - Valencia is more appealing than racing over here in the autumn..........my GW record is 3.00 (2020), 2.58 (2021), 2.57 (2022)..........I have a Feb 2023 entry but that may be a 1/2, depends on fitness and weather.

Legs feel good, but will take the 3 planned days off, kept off the bike commutes too, so no exercise at all.

OO - did you get a refund yet on the returned Nikes ?  I havnt.
  • Options
    WardiWardi ✭✭✭
TR.  I was double swiped on a case of beer in Tesco today.  They were fine about it but the banking systems tend to take a few days to issue refunds rightly or wrongly.  BTW Valencia is a very flat but pleasant course with one of the best marathon finishes anywhere.  That last 200m on a blue mat is over a temporary pontoon!
    Sensible approach on your recovery.

Jools.   CV infection is a strange thing.  When I had it at home Mrs Wardi didn't catch it, when she had it vice versa.  In Spain they are still insisting on covid masks on public transport but pubs, cafes, museums etc not needed.

OO.  hope you recover in the usual time frame, plus the rest of the family!

10.5m today, chilly but a beautiful clear sunny morning made it a pleasant run.

Hope you are feeling better OO and the rest of the family. I have not knowingly had covid despite both my wife and son getting it at different stages.

Best of luck to you Joolska in avoiding catching it too.

Nice work Wardi. The sunny mornings are indeed offsetting the requirement for layers. As noted, better than getting soaked.

Glad to hear you are taking it nice and easy post Sunday TR and that the legs feel good. Recovery is so important. I view it completely differently than I did a few years ago. Interesting comments about the crowded aspect of Valencia. They spoke about it on the podcast - is it the new Berlin etc.

Speaking of which I note they have updated there website to include a 'register for 2023' link. 70 euros for the first 10k entrants is very reasonable. I appreciate its busy but as you alluded to TR, a nice winter race in favourable conditions is attractive.

8 miles this morning indoors. After I returned from walking my pooch I decided to stick the radio on and use the rolling road in my shed instead of slipping around outside. Stay warm folks.

TR - The Next% are in a box to go back, the Pegs currently having a lovely time at a BBQ on Gold Coast beach, Australia as my son fancied them.
Wardi/ SJ - Cheers.  3m easy run this morning, felt great, feeling much better now.  I knew I had a cold but only knew it was CV as my wife tested herself as she is NHS and was +.

Good to hear OO. A lot of colds doing the rounds as well. I am in the same boat re Mrs SJ is also nhs.

Marathon marcus on the Runners Life podcast ran 2.58 at Valencia, he said the first 6m was too busy. But not sure what he expected.

SJ - it was -4 When I cycled in today, fingers were screaming at me.

OO - good that you're on the mend. I phoned Nike, I've had to send in a photo of my proof of sending receipt that the post office gave me.

About 2 degrees mid morning here though blue sky and bright sun took the edge off the chill.  2 layers on top, shorts, plus an odd combo of beanie hat and sunglasses.  8.5m done, felt ok once I got going, no ice.

TR.. blimey that sounds very cold!  I can't cycle at all in winter.

SJ.  thanks for the heads up on Valencia entries.  Spending money on foreign marathons a year away just before Xmas does seem slightly indulgent but when needs must... 😏

OO.. good to hear you're almost back to normal.  I did run through my covid and did feel better for it.

Wardi - agreed, is rather run than cycle, but its commutes so needs must.

SJ - got some Rides for 70 today. My 1080s are nearly one so they can replace them, and become an alternative to Pegs some days.

Reckon it was about -5 on the trail section today accross some fields, it was like Narnia with ice covering everything.

Jeez, it was fresh today. As wfh did my run noontime, sunny, blue sky, crisp so ran along the coast path around Polzeath, glorious.

Overseas marathons always a good adventure, 4 years today saw the best Christmas lights ever in Malaga  worth a quick Google.

Wondering how LS21 is getting on with his early runs?

TR..  the Narnia description sounds good, stunning views around in the last couple of days.

OO.. Alicante had some spectacular Xmas lights and a giant bauble.  Plus a giant nativity display..
Similar cold but sunny weather here this morning.  About 1-2 degrees colder then yesterday but two long sleeve layers & shorts were comfy enough over 5m.  Frost on the ground but no ice.

Nice work on the Rides TR. I have pretty much retired the 1080's I had due to the weird heel counter and the slippage on anything but totally flat roads. I enjoyed the 2E width in those but the fit was all wrong for me (in that version at least). I don't think we've seen temps that low here. If I anything its warmed slightly as the week went on.

Coastal path sounding as idyllic as ever OO. More so I would guess at this time of year. We are blessed in this country to get legit all four seasons.

That is an impressive display Wardi. The markets were always a novelty of visiting european cities but we've mostly adopted those now in the UK over last several years. Agreed on the indulgence factor of stumping up for an overseas marathon a year away. I'm signing up (if I can) and then forgetting about it for a bit. Out of sight out of mind. I guess attention needs to return in order to sort out the logistics sooner rather than later? Saying that, I've not entered Manchester next April yet.

8 miles early doors today in blizzard conditions for the 30 min tempo section. I got it done but it was far from enjoyable. I did consider doing it indoors but since it wasn't frosty decided to layer up and hit the closed cycle path. The snow started just as I began the tempo effort. Slippery as the snow settled but the first half is net downhill so got into a decent pace.

The second half of the tempo back up the slope needed max concentration. A decent workout considering. I think this will be a run I look to increase in duration going into the next training block. Hopefully in more favourable conditions.

Wardi - good to be able to wait for daylight.

SJ - 1080s are solid, but not worth the extra cost over Pegs (or rides when they are 70). Good one on the tempo, I see value in longer tempos nowadays. I did a few 10miilers around the +10% area recently, plus the ling sections of +10% or mp in a few later long runs. The +10% long sections are real fitness builders for me, without being too hard or tiring. Esp early on a Tuesday morning in the middle of marathon hold up......defo worth the odd stimulus change though, I'm going to put a few more rep sessions in next campaign and mix the paces so more like 5 x (3,2,1 min) rather than the 12x3min.

Was able to wait to run at 10am today as didnt need to run far, and there was ice everywhere which i was hoping would melt a bit. Slight hammy and glute tightness (But i always have that), but legs are pretty good already.

SJ..  a good and brave effort doing tempo runs in the snow & chilly conditions, bet it was nice to get it done.

TR.. sounds like you've recovered reasonably well from the marathon.  This cold snap is a nuisance for running,.  I did get a slipping feeling on an exposed flyover this morning bur otherwise ok, about 1-2 degrees here.

10.3m earlier, it was a bit raw so my running tights made a rare outing.  No snow here yet

A light dusting of snow here this morning made for a beautiful run through the Blaise estate as part of my 9 miler.  It's nice that the hamstring has now recovered so that I feel brave enough to go a longer distance from home, and can start to revisit favourite routes I've had to skip for a while.

Lovely to be out running fave routes once again Joolska. Especially so that you feel strong enough as you say.

Good work getting out yesterday Wardi.  Ive been in tights,  long sleeved top, base layer, gloves and hat all week! I think I'll always be a soft southerner

Those shorter efforts will get you up on your toes TR and stress other systems as you say. A balancing act for sure. Too much and things start to grumble for me. Consistent tempo running has helped me. As we always say it's not rocket science but until this year tempos would be something I would regularly skip. I've learned to control them better now going off perceived effort. It means I'm mostly running them between HMP and MP pace which feels comfortably hard. I don't get stressed if the numbers are not to my liking anymore. It's the effort that counts after all.

14 miles this morning along the same path as yesterdays tempo. The snow that had fallen had turned to slush and ice in places. I spent most or the run today seeking out wet tarmac.

It wasn't the most pleasant run. Felt quite achy and my back has been sore these past few days. Stretching and hot water bottle ease it. A bit of a jarring sensation intermittently whilst running. A sort of 'jolt' that straighten you up momentarily.

Wardi - could be a tough running winter, we've gone from constant soakings into freezing cold.

Jools - good to see that improvement.

SJ - good one on the 14. Defo the right attitude to the tempo effort vs pace. I had a good reminder recently of that when i wasnt hitting the numbers id like to see but still ended up doing ok........the shorter reps will be to try to maintain a certain amount of range of motion and pace, the 36min aim should help with that.......Dids ran a low 36 today at Telford and he's an m60 now. I was that pace early 2020, which wasnt long ago, so a smidge of quicker stuff should help.

Was able to wait until 10am again today, which enables a lot of defrosting of pavements.

TR.. it now seems a fair while ago that I was looking through my drawer for my lightest t-shirts in the summer heatwave!

Jools.. good news that your hamstring is improving, you've been very patient!  Good distance today.

SJ.. congrats getting that 14m done in less than ideal conditions.  I tend to hang from the stair banisters if I've got back grumbles, hope it eases for you.

Just over 9m today. Still no snow or rain so cold but no ice.  Gloriously sunny for most of the run, spotted a Kingfisher too.
I'm walking down to the Indian takeaway soon.  It's about -3 now so something from the hotter side of the menu beckons.
