I must confess to not knowing much about it. Is it the festival of lights? I remember seeing a short film about Diwali in Teletubbies when the kids were small...
I know my kids did a celebration of Holi at school earlier in the year (a festival about colour if I remember rightly)...
If there is anyone on the forum who celebrates Diwali, I'd love to hear all about it and what you do to celebrate it?
I for one have a celebration coming up at the end of this month and can't wait!!
What a lovely idea, Staggers!! Bless you, you wonderful person!
Yes Creamcake it is the festival of lights. Where I used to live the town's rec gets taken over and they have a light festival and parade, is amazing and such a nice atmosphere.
sadly couldn't make it to my Hindu cousins this year, but it was always my favourite festival as a child - the best bits of Bonfire Night & Christmas all at once!
We had a great night. Lots of family. Tons of food. A big (but friendly) argument about science vs philosophy. Fireworks. (And a 10 minute religious bit which i took part in because its respectful and a bit fun to pass around a dish full of flames but which I don't really believe in because I'm an atheist). And a lesson on Hinduism from a man who then said he's an atheist but religon provides good metaphors for how to live.

Happy Diwali.
Mrs W is Hindu and we are off to the family party in an hour or so.
Lots of food. No, LOTS of food. Then fireworks. Think Christmas and you'll be on the right lines.
And Monday is the Hindu new year which means you must start out as you mean to go on so we shall spend much of tomorrow cleaning the house.
It's great to find out about other cultures and their celebrations!!
It must be so beautiful!

Sounds like a great night! I spent yesterday evening in Pizza Express with a few forumites who were running Abingdon marathon today!!
Hope the cleaning went/is going well in preparation for the Hindu New Year, Waapster...
