It is in the news today that Richmond Council in SW London are considering penalising 'gas guzzling' cars by charging them up to 200% more for their parking permits.
I, for one think this is vote grabbing rather than any serious concern for the environment.
It's the council's job to keep the amenities working properly etc, not decide who drives what cars!

I'm no fan of 4x4s but I do believe in fair taxation.
Charging more to park your car, based on what type of car it is a crazy. A new BMW 4x4 will cause fewer emissions that an old Ford Escort.
By all means tax emissions but not choice of purchase.
And I'm not sure this will grab votes. Tripling (if I remember correctly) the parking charges for a second car won't go down well in one of London's more affluent boroughs.
I agree, nobody in Richmond 'needs' a 4x4. But we live in a democratic country, it is everyon'es personal choice what car they drive isn't it?
If you only charged them another 10% it would have no impact.
sorry but some of these 4x4 take up a slilly amount of room!
BMW one gets my goat. Can't even "go off road" Good old land rover defender takes up a piffle amount and thats a real 4x4 used for its real job(in the main)
Anyone who drives a large (expensive) gas guzzling car is already paying extra tax in the fuel that they use and also in the increased vat they paid on the price of their expensive car and or extra in car tax. what are the local councils going to do with the tax. i bet its not going towards any green projects or recycling
Its not really a tax. Its a parking charge. You now have to pay extra to NOT drive the car as well as paying extra to drive it.
And don't dare have a second car...
So's a volvo v50! Have you tried off roading in your BMW?
Why does someone have to go off road in a 4x4?? That's like saying someone who has a Ferrari has to drive at 160 mph?
Useless TOYS! They never go off road.
buy a Ferrari no doubt you will do the odd "ton" but you won't do it all the time. Engine is to nice to b*gger up all the time.
People are jumping on the 'they have a BMW, therefore they must be rich buggers' let's tax them
I have no issue with BMWs per say just that fecking x5 carp.
fatso you have ducks and sheep and sh*t, i think then its called a work tool not a toy.
PMSL! I may fancy a duck sometime
no sorry that should be f*ck.
Dave
such lovley beasts as scobbys and jags to choose.
, And if you can afford to run a car like that surely you can afford the extra tax/parking.
NO WAY would i drive that car!
The house we bought in Chester even has a "tall" garage door so you can get a 4x4 into the garage... How sad is that
I take it thats your "county" run around?
nice motor!
Parking - based on size
and 'Green tax' based on emmissions.
As not all 4 wheel drive cars are that big - Rav 4 etc. compared to a Mondeo or Volvo Estate.
Also just coz something is 4WD it's not necessarily a 'gas guzzler'.
So if they were to bring in higher parking or car tax bands, then this may hit other motorists too, not just those in a 4x4.
Saying that, i still think the 'trend' for large 4x4's and Double Cabs is too much for our roads and space.
We are not the American mid-west, or Austrailian outback!!!!!
But some of the 4x4 supposed Off roaders are nothing more than a bad penile extension
Thank feck I've got a big drive at home. It's free to park my Range Rover Vogue and the wifes X5. <<waves two fingers at council>>
