Hi all,
I entered outlaw last week and I am already starting to worry about getting in enough time on the bike.
I think my only option over the winter will be investing in a turbo trainer. Can anybody recommend one? I dont really want to go over £250.

Jason e-bay might be a good option. Most cycle shops will have cheap none singing and dancing models for about £90 plus if any use. You might find spinning useful over winter as well if your in a gym or got one nearby and see you come July.
Wiggle were doing a £250ish one for about £100 last week but I think that's sold out - they have got other ones on sale though. Also the code 10-OFF was giving an extra 10% off when I used it last week...
quite a few on the forum have this turbo - http://www.wiggle.co.uk/elite-crono-fluid-elastogel-trainer/. we have 2 - one each so we can turbo together....ahhhhhh! it usually comes out well in reviews, is pretty quiet for a turbo, is a good price, is reliable and also folds up for storage. well recommended.
Slightly over budget but I'd get this - you need either power or speed to work with - or arguably heart rate - this one has all three built in although surprisingly you need to supply your own chest strap - I'd still get it though and just work on power.

edit - why are my links faded and FBs bright blue !
+1 on that recommendation. We have two side by side aswell, turbo dates in the garage, how romantic
Get yourself a taxc for around £100. Not the best but do the job.
Elite Ironman, Ultra Trail Runner
agreed, I have a Tacx Sirius and its ace !
Thanks everybody for the advice. I will look into the two models suggested.
so much choice and having not used one beforei dont have clue what i am looking for.
Look at TrainerRoad too. Works a bit like a Tacx Flow, but on your laptop. Check it works with your turbo (you'll also need speed/cadence sensor and ANT+ stick).
+1 for the http://www.wiggle.co.uk/elite-crono-fluid-elastogel-trainer/
Does the job well. Shame about the rider here though who is bored after no more than 20 mins.......
I got this one; http://www.decathlon.co.uk/hometrainer-supercrono-digital-id_8164387.html#
Really like it, easy to set up, quiet. Has a power reading, though I've not seen any reviews as to how accurate it is, but its better than nothing for training and an improvement in power is an improvement regardless of what the readings are, so I'm hoping it will be motivational up try and up my power scores over the winter.
"edit - why are my links faded and FBs bright blue !"
they're blue when unclicked but fade to grey if clicked on
Echo FB but I have the magnetised resistor version. Which reminds me, must get soem DVDs in for the winter.
I fancy "Ironwars" all the Star Wars films in one session for a laugh. Mehuey XXXL Doner Kebab after.
A nicely timed thread this as I have also entered outlaw and will be in need of a turbo trainer.
just ordered the - http://www.wiggle.co.uk/elite-crono-fluid-elastogel-trainer/.
and Thanks to RustMan, the code 10-OFF is still giving an extra 10% off.
just need a bike to go on it now.
I shall expect my commission in due course...
Tried out my new turbo the other night - a fan is definitely next on the shopping list!
For the OP, if you haven't ordered yet I can only repeat recommendation for the Tacx. However if you look at some of the EU sites, you can save a lot of money on other models. The Flow should come in around your budget from www.bike-discount.de and is upgradable later if you want a full PC interface
