Apologies if someone has already posted about this but has anyone got any views on whether to wear road or trail shoes for this race along the canal path? Am thinking of doing it as my first ultra and currently do most of my running on road. Cheers

It will depend on the weather ! If we have a dry winter road shoes will be ok, if we have a wet one then trail or hybrids.
Last year was dry and the path frozen solid so road shoes would have been fine, but later in the year I did the TP100 on the same route and the section around Abingdon was a slippy mud bath.
I ran in lightweight trail shoes for both and was happy with my shoe selection.
Thanks...will look into it!
I'm thinking of entering this in 2013. I live in Oxford so know the course between there and Abingdon very well. Road shoes will be fine if it's been dry, but this is somewhat unlikely in February - there's a good chance it'll be a slippy mud bath. I reckon trail shoes are your best bet.
It can get seriously muddy on that stretch, like it did around this time last year. Then again, as Dougie says, for the race this year it was frozen solid, so road shoes would have been perfect. I think with something like this it's worth just keeping your options open, and possibly having a road and trail version of the same shoe, and training in both.
Good dose of winter rain and it will be wellingtons !
... or flippers...
Under most conditions this race can be tackled just fine with road shoes, but if it rains heavily in the week leading up to it, then you might consider switching to trail shoes.
Any idea when this one fills up? I'm still umming and ahhing, never having run more than 26.2miles before, but it starts practically on my doorstep
50miles oranj....flat but freeeezing
I entered this last week so it isn't full yet (though I believe that the free charity places have all been taken).
I also ran from Oxford to Radley at the weekend (the first part of the course) and it was extremely muddy and slippy, even with trail shoes. Fingers crossed it doesn't rain too much in late Jan.
be good fun whatever the weather Lemony
Not too worried about the weather on the day, but this will be my first ultra so it would be nice if conditions underfoot weren't too treacherous. Still - it will be fun whatever! Will you be running it?
yes i am Lemony, after doing WT in January and Druids in 2 weeks time-so hopefully i will acclimatised to colder condtions by TT50
Yep, I know how far it is loulabell! Oh soddit, I'm entering. What's the worst that can happen?
You can have the most amazing time, and come away with the biggest grin you've ever had....
That's the ONLY thing that's gonna happen
Oh, and Oranj - i've done a 30 and a 60 mile ultra - and i've never run a marathon, so I wouldn't worry about it
just reminding you gently Oranj....thats the way to do it-just hit enter and then go 'oh f...............................' works everytime
16 weeks to go. About the same length of time as my usual Ironman build up. Reckon I should be OK provided I can steer clear of any niggles (famous last words!). Got Luton Marathon next month which'll be a nice stepping stone.
I'm signed up for this, too - first ultra! Out of interest, in the CP Info it says "after 1500 runners must be paired". Does this mean you literally have to run in lockstep with someone else after 1500? Bit inconvenient if you can't find someone going at your pace, surely....
This event has a pretty big field, and there will almost certainly be two or three people with you at any given time.
we can do a 3 legged event
thats a shame - i cant talk to anyone incessantly then
Ermmm, other than me you mean.....
*mental note to self... iPod in rucksack pocket!*
Does anyone know how strict they are about the pairing? I reckon that I probably won't make the cut-off time for pairing at the last CP. But I tend to prefer running races very much at my own pace (especially the second half as I try to run negative splits). Not sure how it will pan out for a whole 50-miler, but I'd hate to feel I was slowing someone else down (or vice versa). I can see the point of pairing once it gets dark, but it should be ok until around 4pm.
This year my recorded time at the last checkpoint was 4:15pm - I was not asked to pair up.
That's encouraging. Hopefully they won't feel the need to be stricter with us girlies!
oi!!!
lemony, im sure they wont be
