It is a shame that Henley is stuggling to get people excited, I guess it doesnt help that Outlaw is so popular.
I dont know if we should move the championships or not? What about those that have entered Henley on this basis?
If we were to move it, im against changing to Outlaw, purely on the basis that Outlaw was the champs last year. Outlaw will no doubt be popular (perhaps the most popular) event most years, the location of the Champs isnt about numbers.
As I said before when this was debated on the Outlaw thread a few months ago, I think we should get back to sailing the pirate ship overseas, whether that be Europe or further afield. For me (and I know for others) having the champs outside the UK adds the extra special element to the experience, a mini holiday, all in it together etc etc. It just didnt feel the same at Outlaw this year with many arriving the day before and dispursed accross numerous hotels, campsites etc.
Barley, Outlaw is now sold out, i know that all that went on the reserve list last year did get in but still, If henley is the choice then it will be a good turn out regardless i would have thought, Lanzas already booked for some and those that can't make the early one are looking later ones.
If we were to change it the only options I can see are:
Wales Lanza Outlaw
I cant see there being enough interest for another event. Perhaps the lesser evil is to leave it as Henley, even if only half a dozen race there its still the Pirate Championship, youve got to be in it to win it!
Whatever happens we need to make an early decision on the 2014 champs and sell the event / get people interested. Even then there may still be a popularity contest with Outlaw?

I agree, im sure Henley will draw in quite a few more people, its also got the benefit of being unlikely to fill up so people can enter next year. Im potentially doing Henley but not worked out my plan for next year yet.
Why would they both be on the same day again?, i'm sure there is a simple answer but to me it's a shame as Seren says some will have commited to Wales already.
If I had to vote (if we were to change the Champs) then I would go for either Lanza or keep Henley whichever had the most entries but as has been said before, Henley will benefit from last minute decisions/entries
I just got the vibe that this was not a lot of peoples choice anymore ... we can wait and look again in the New Year say? No need to rush to a decision
There may of course be an option to take Lanza & Henley and use a % of AG for the prizes and have a big prize giving social somewhere

Not sure I like that idea, sounds a bit complicated and probably better to stick to one race otherwise it removes the element of people racing head to head.
Having read the recent comments and chewed it over in my mind its probably best to stick with Henley. Its not the end of the world if only half a dozen take part, the prize giving maybe a bit lower key thats all.
Its been published as the the pirate championship long enough, if people want to take part theyll enter, if they dont then thats their choice. As said there's a long time to go and id imagine at least a dozen will be there racing.
Pretty likely that both events will have an awards ceremony afterwards, just one will be missing the shields, there'll still be mincers and lost in transitioners to be congratulated I'd think
some of the guys I bike with did Henley this year..... When I catch up with them again i'll report back.
I was also wondering about what race to do late next year - ended up with IMW, a US one (but all sold out), or Henley....
Henley is not floating my boat for some reason, but at least I'll be able to get in... Wales is an option, but not too many pirates seem to be going....
Comments
Trogs ... are you related to Plum ??
IMW.its still open for next year and will probably stay open.............its the same day as Henley so the same training period.......

I suspect that 2014 will have some new LD race options in Europe with the way that WTC are expanding their race calendar around the world.
if not, why not look at other Challenge Events like Roth (although that's been done), Barcelona, Copenhagen, Vichy??
I'm probably going to do Vichy now they changed the date to 1 Sep
How quickly will vicky sell out does anyone know?
I'll be going to Challenge Henley - I think quite a few will but its not filling out as fast as Outlaw - so theres less need to commit ?
Lanza is just too early for me in the season - I wont have had enough chance to swim OW.
Outlaw was good - but thats full and it was last years event.
IMWales - one day I'll do it - but that rough sea swim in the first year didnt appeal to the landlubber in me !
I fancy IMSweden for 2014 - I've not been there before.
Wot he said, Sweden for 2014!
Gladys and i were looking at Sweden for 14 too, looks a right pain getting to the start though.
fyi - Sweden 2013 sold out in a couple of hours so you'd need to be quick when it opens next year.
Kalmar is also not the easiest place to get to - think Klagenfurt++ - and is one hell of a drive (at least 2 days each way)
other than that - pancake flat
Don't think Henley is even open for entries yet, as they're still working out the bke route.
Sweden 2014 sounds interesting though....
where is the latest list for challenge Henley..........if you have a dozen people then you might as well keep it there
its the same day as wales and a few have committed to wales again
The website says Henley opens for entries on 3 October - and they're saying the date is now 8 September.
I'll be there - but it's only about 20 miles away from me and that's a big plus
Anyone fancy Brazil for 2014? I can get free accomodation

Suits me

I'll be racing at Henley.
Bet I still win the feckin mincing award at IMW though!
Gladys you would win the mincing award at Henley even if you were competing in Lanza
