Hi
Now the weather has become a little colder I am finding that I have a build up of nasal 'fluid' and have to get rid of it. Obviously, when I am out on a training run I wait until there is nobody around before I get rid of said fluid. I have my first half marathon in November where, of course, it's going to be more difficult to get rid of it when nobody is around. I appreciate that some people will find this a disgusting habit but when it's in there it has to go. Does anybody have any advice on how best to approach this or is there anything out there that could prevent the nasal build up ?
Cheers

You could always try a non drowsy hayfever medication which will help dry up the mucus. I've done this before and it does the trick, but I find it can dry my lips out as well so I need to sip water more often.
Failing that, take some tissues with you to use en route.
i get this bad all yr round and even on intervals on the track. Basically i clear my throat / nose when needed. i try not to do it near somebody in case they get splattered, but i have no issues anybody witnessing it , particularly in a race.
I normally aim for bushes if i need to clear my throat. If i need to clear my nose - then i'll use a tissue.
@emmy_h
Would it bother you if you saw somebody clear their nose, without using a tissue, providing they were attempting to be discreet ? What if they did it blatantly in front of you ?
Its a common occurrence in races, when I need to clear my throat I just move to the side and spit it out (as long as there's no spectators in the way!).
Only bothers me when its someone does it in the middle of the path/road and they don't think of the people behind them.
Doesn't bother me at all if people do either, just have a bit of awareness where you are firing stuff during times when there are a lot of people around.
Perfect your snot rocket aim prior to the race, away from runners..
Or wear gloves, aka tramp's hanky
@Cartersusm - I think it's disgusting but a necessary part of running for some people. As long as it doesnt hit me/another runner - I don't mind it.
I have spent a great deal of time trying to perfect the art and etiquette of spitting while running. It takes dedication but you too could become a master expectorator lol.
P.S. If it sticks to your chin it's time to hydrate.
I guess it's just one of those things that can't be helped providing it doesn't hit anyone else. Good to know most people are understanding of it
Ha Ha Forbes, I must admit this was going through my mind on Sunday at the Edinburgh 10k. I havent yet perfected the art of spitting forwards if I have runners at either side. It something I have to practice
I spit a lot while running, I snotter a lot while cycling. Move to the side, check there's nobody too close behind you, honk it out. Wipe your nose with your hand, wipe your hand on your shorts. I don't care if snot rockets aren't ladylike and I don't care too much if they disgust other people. I figure, as long as I don't actually spit at or on anyone, it's really their problem not mine. That said, I do try to be reasonably discreet about it. One of the guys in my running club is an expert snot rocketeer and can fire bogeys a spectacular distance. I'm rather envious of his talent.
I have a medical nasal problem, and as well as steroid sprays my doctor recommended this sinus rinse http://www.amazon.co.uk/NeilMed-SinusRinse-Saline-Nasal-Rinse/dp/B000A0S5KC. I've noticed it's really helped me, especially if I do it before I go out on my longer runs- it basically just washes out all the snot in your nose (it's actually fairly revolting, but it helps!), might be worth a try?
Never heard of a nasal rinse before. Might have to give that a "blast", as it were.
@penguingirl - thanks for the advice, I too may give it a blast
