I've only ever used vas, but to be fair I don't tend to chaffe to badly, not such that it bothers me in the race at any rate.
Well just got back from the physio and have some nice bright blue tape on my achillies, very trendy! Going to have a light jog tomorrow to see how it feels and make final decision on whether to run or not, feels OK at the moment but it is unpredictable.
She was telling me that gels are pointless during a race as they have so little energy in them, well I normally take 4, don't think I will try it out for this time though!
Is your physio a sports nutritionist too? If you're running very slow, like 1min/mi outside race pace, then I guess you could make it to the end with no slowdown if you'd carbo loaded, but I wouldn't dream of trying to run one fast (3h15) without taking 300-600 cals on during the run. And in cool weather, that's going to involve gels, seeing as I don't want 5 pints of lucozade sloshing round my tum and a tree break every few miles
It kind of makes sense, I reckon I burn around 17 calories a minute (upto 20 on harder runs) and a gel has 86 calories. Thats about 5mins worth of energy. So that would be 12 and hour, I think I would be very very sick
I burn 15/min at 3h20 pace so 3000 for the whole race. But half of that comes from fat, plus I'm not trying to stop "the wall", just delay it until I get 26mi 385yds 1inch from the start line, so I think any more than 3 gels an hour would be total overkill for me. Plus yeah, how would you digest 12? doesn't bear thinking about!
I will stick to my 2 an hour and bottle of water (handed by my good wife). For me its hydration thats most important I think. Weather is looking a lot better, wind lower again and a bit of sun forecast.
That's a shame Keith, but better not to make it worse. Mine's grumbling a little, but with new shoes, Rock tape and a slow pace, I am hoping it will hold up.
I running on sunday and looking to get between 3:16 and 3:30. only planning on using 3 Gels (one every 6 miles) adn taking on either lucazade or powerade?
Is anyone else running at 7:30 min/mile pace and what are their gels/drink plan?
Weather is totally unpredictable at the minute 2 websites are saying different things? Looking forward to it still though. Hope all goes well for everyone.
Well, despite the awful weather, what an enjoyable event that was! Pootled around in a moderate pace, Achilles held up well and I feel fine today. The course was a lot more enhjoyable than I expected it to be, although I found the surface through the industrial estate tiring, not sure why. Hope they do it again.
Hi Rosemary - a cautious, first run-all-the-way for me - just over 4.50 - so dead chuffed! Really nice event, even with the rain! When's your next run out?
Agree it was enjoyable, shame about the weather (particularly for spectators), not too bad for running apart from the headwind and drizzle in the dreary industrial end. Fantastic support from just about everyone that turned up. Thanks, Great Yarmouth.

Aren't gels supposed to top up your carbs?

Hang on, hey, if the reason gels are pointless is because they have so little energy in them, I've got a brilliant solution. Eat twice as many

well my achillies isn't playing ball so I'm not going to be able to run on Sunday. GL everyone.

Can't help, I'm afraid. I'm doing HR training at the moment, so will be pootling along waaaayyyyy behind you.
On the gels, I do 1 every 45 mins, mixture of Torq and Gu. I don't really like powerade or lucozade, so I tend not to bother with them.

Hi Rosemary - how did you get on? That loop up through the industrial estate seemed to go on forever!
I was glad I only did the 10km.
Hi Ian, a nicely-paced 4.28, which given my recent form I am pleased with. How did you get on?
Hi Rosemary - a cautious, first run-all-the-way for me - just over 4.50 - so dead chuffed! Really nice event, even with the rain! When's your next run out?
Beachy Head on Saturday - you?
Fenland 10 on sunday then Rutland Water Marathon the following weekend! Is beachy head sold out yet?
Yes, it sells out pretty quick. I'm also doing Rutland Water - here's hoping the weather is better!
I did Rutland last year - and it was freezing! But very scenic - see you there - I'm aiming for 4.30ish!

Really enjoyed the day. Weren't all the marshalls fantastic!! Despite the weather they were there for all the runners, both 10K and Marathoners.
Would definitely do it again!
