I tried posting this once but messed up the description and it looked like a football stream spam (or maybe the question is boring but I try again anyway).
I have decided to enter my first HM next year. I am very nervous and want to pick the right one. I want to shoot for Autumn 2013 and am looking at Great Birmingham, Robin Hood or Leicester.
Anyone with experience of any of these? Which one is the "best"?

Why are you looking so far ahead? Even if you don't run much now, you could train up to a half marathon in the spring easily enough.
What is making you so nervous?
What do you mean by "best"?
go for your local one
best could mean anything.we need some more info.......
do you like flat or hilly..........quiet or with thousands of others.............
a quick course or a scenic one.........
Good points.
Best for me would be reaonably flat, big event and scenic (or at least an interesting course).
I take your point on spring Wilkie and I have already done a 10k and upto 17k on a training runs. However my pace is slow and I would like to give myself a good few months (a few more 10k events) and try to get my pace up a little more before tackling a HM.
spring is full of them........not so many for autumn......
Have you done an event with thousands of other runners? Are you sure you like that?
Personally, I don't like big events. I don't like loads of other people around me, in front of me, and slowing down, three abreast, getting in my way.I would also say there's no need to be nervous. Thirteen miles seems like a long way now, but by the time you've put in loads of long runs you will be ready for it.
Go for it and good luck
Great Birmingham is a big event, mostly flat but wouldn't say it is an interesting course.
B ham, RH or Leicester ??
depends what u want ?
Bham, 18,000 + staggered start - i hate that
RH, - 12,000 - flat, undulating, lots of support
Leicester, 1,700 ? bit of town , then along a river - park path
my order of preference
2- 1 - 3
Thanks Micknphil. I think that is the way I am headed.
Hi Steve,
It wasn't on your list but I did Bristol half as a training run for Liverpool marathon last year and loved it. It was scenic and really flat and there was quite a few different surfaces to run on ... including sandy paths and cobbles! Also ... got a PB!
