Total newbie questions, sorry. I'm testing the water at the moment as to whether or not to enter my first tri. Should I invest in a wetsuit AND a trisuit for a pool event, or just a trisuit? Is a Specialised road bike with toe clips only and a pair of decent trainers sufficient? I run half marathons, so I have the decent trainers already. Should I just book an event and go for it? Bit worried about looking a plonker lol

What distance are you looking at? Some people will say road bike and cleats for the bike and the running shoes for the run, but others will say that that time gained on the bike could be lost changing into running shoes, so would opt for trainers for bike and run.
The good thing about Tri is there is no right and wrong. It's all down to what you feel is comfortable.
And yes, just man up and enter an event . Then come back here and tell us which event you have entered and we will give you virtual support. And you may never know, but one of us may be doing it as well
yes eneter an event and go for it.normal trainers are fine and you won't lose much time on the short distances.......
but be warned .you will do one and start thinking where you can save time and before you know it you will clip in pedals bike shoes a wetsuit a new bike and some shiny new bling
i wish they did allow wetsuits in the pool..i swim so much quicker wearing one.
steve.never too old or too chubby if you want to do things..but do the things that make you happy......swimming and cycling are both great cross training for running...good luck
Nicer people at the tris, more cameraderie IMO.
a lot more cameraderie at tri events than at running events.
Steve - go for it, enter one and have fun
Marathons are all very well and it does take a hell of a lot to get round but for me, it's a bit of a one trick pony. The Tris seem more varied eg OW/pool etc.
seems like i posted it on the wrong thread.stupid computer
dustboy.don't agree re marathons..........you can get such variety in marathons.......London, beachy head, snowdon, the sandwell one where you run through the longest canal tunnel in pitch black for ages.........
so many to choose from and all so different
