Only slightly I intend to bat with a more positive attitude after lunch looking for some quick runs as I fear the offer of their mum taking them to see " Planes" at the cinema later may cause a premature end to todays play
From what I have read it is just a brand thing and people want to be able say rag that they have done one. Probably the same kind of thing as the london marathon, its just about saying you've done it, but finishing it is nothing like actually competing- IMHO And that applies to any people don't finish in 1.5x the winners time.
Not sure that I see anything particularly obnoxious in Flob's original arguement. It is simplistic, but this is a Forum, not wikipedia. And the arbitary 1.5x thing is bone-headed. But doing the London Marathon does seem to carry more kudos than doing one in Stevenage. I also suspect that it's a better day out too. In my experience, the same is true for an MDot Ironman in comparison to doing The Woodie, or Outlaw. Or are we all supposed to pretend that bragging rights and ego aren't part of the motivation??
but all the competing or completing thing is impossible to judge.........one person could have given every last breathe and effort to teh day and finished in 16 hours.whilst another could have had a bit of an easy training sesion and sauntered home in 13 hours......
so putting a time thing is silly......in the end everyone is just doing it for their own personal reasons.....and if someones reasons are to finish in the top 50 places of a race......and then they look for the races where the fast peeps don't go or DNS because they look at the start lineup and see they are outclassed.... then to me I can't understand their personal motivation.....
UPDATE, drinks interval, we are having some vimto.
They have have brought in two lads from down the road, I am not entirely happy with this as I remember Ricky Ponting being run out by sub fielder Gary Pratt a few years back. One of the lads claims to bein the Horndon u9's, so will have to be a bit cautios with his bowling. Curently 451*not out.
What do you win at the end......how big is the medal......and how far is it for each run and has it been offcially mjeasured so that today can count as a PB
Close of play on the second day and I stand 599* not out.
Play was abandoned for the day when the offer of popcorn and "Planes" at the cinema was just too much for my young opposition.
Been out and mowed the wicket just now and measured it, just short of 8 metres.
Slight case of cheating to report, the 4y year old would run after the ball, feign an injury in attempt to make me take a extra run and spring to his feet and try to run me out. Dealt with this by smashing his next 4 overs for nearly 46 runs...that'll learn him.
With the lead at nearly a 1000 I think I will put them in early tomorrow and then bowl them out just after lunch (not before, as their mum is making a Victoria sponge for us)
Good moring from the back garden on the morning of the third day. A lot of overnight rain has leftstanding water on the wicket, we have agreed to play X box for a while and there will be an inspection at 10.30

Flob, you do seem obsessed with our obsession with Ironman.

Fear not, that's Tony Hill, so the decision will be reversed after DRS
I thought it was Golden Boots, hailing a cab home.
is there a score update?

No-one has mentioned IM tattoos yet?
FF.......check that they havem't switched the ball during the break.......
Guessing you've collected a lot of those runs in boundaries, FF.
Probably about 60%, getting in a lot of quick singles as the oppo get tired now.
is it proper vimto or that ribena rubbish ?
how long does this go on for???
Is there a cut-off?

does it give bragging rights?
Whatever it is you clearly should be doing it quicker
I think "slow" in cricket is good - maybe
Oh? Perhaps it is a pirate sport after all

I hope you're going to teach your girls to play when they are old enough!
