I would probably let her have the time for Boston, but not let her 'win' count in the event. That way she gets the qualification she wants (which doesn't make any difference to those in the race), but doesn't get a recognised win or any money- thus not putting the back up of those who entered 'properly'.
Good story! I presume they're certain she ran the full, correct course? Anyway, I thought it was a central tennet of sport... she should be disqualified.
Wasn't there some sort of similar case a few months ago? Might not have been exactly the same scenario, but I'm sure there was something a bit like this. Any ideas?
Not in a race. Not qualified. Run it, dis-qualified.
Doesn't matter that she ran the distance etc, there are pre-requisites to comply with.
To extend the idea of giving the prize and victory to people in this manner, its but a short step to giving the prize to someone who would have won had they been there but was doing something else that day.
I still dont get how someone can miraculously appear on the course having taking a 'wrong turn' that every other competitor managed not to do, and that everyone would just go 'OK, we'll take your word for it.'
At the end of the day I didnt get anywhere from the story that someone saw her take a wrong turn and can verify she actually ran the distance she claimed up to that point.
That's another thing. Next time I want to do a marathon, I'll just enter the half, but but take a wrong turn and run the full marathon. Should save me twenty quid in entrance fees.
RK - I recommend Robin Hood Marathon then, as the turn off point consisted of a bloke bellowing through a loud speaker.
Mr A - some dubious journalism in that article, including the fact that some of her family caught up with her later (yet the half marathon started 25 mins earlier). I think we have your next investigation lined up.
Their chip times are almost identical, as you would expect ...... but the gun times are wildly out of place. As are the gun positions.
In fact if you looked only at the gun time and chip time, you would swear one set off 13 minutes after the other and then stayed at that exact time all the way around the entire course, which clearly couldnt have happened.
Seems its not just the human element that the RH organisers need to sort out.
Results are not yet confirmed - there have been a few teething problems with the staggered start etc. Lets call it a 'learning experience'. Full results next week .....
Funny the Nottingham story - many many many years ago Eleanor Adams (I think her name was) won the Robin Hood Half and then went back out onto the course and won the marathon. In those days you just entered the race and could decide at half way whether you finished or carried on for the full race. I seem to remember that she was quite upset when the organisers refused to give her both first prizes.

Most likely explanation is that they started in different pens, and one of them waited 13 minutes before crossing the start line. Gun time seems pretty meaningless if you have more than one gun...

We've done this one. http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/forum/events/is-this-allowed--/264511.html
I think we ended up deciding it wasn't fair, it was allowed because the race director's decision is final, and the race director was a dickhead.
late to the party Petey old son?
Nice post Mr Slowbie. Heard about that new band The Beatles?
Ouch lol!

Man, I'm tired of being right all the time

That's Mr Collins told Sussex!
In defence of Peter, who would have thought a running related thread would find its way into Clubhouse. Surely that is the story.
Enter a race, you're in it. Qualified.

ah but she was wearing headfones.
Standard fare for people at the front of fields.
Not.
Sorry to be late to this one, but some of us actually do that thing, work - heard of it? - and aren't on frigging forums every minute of every day.
note to self ....... never make Peter angry when hes in a bad mood.
I really do apologise. Next time I'll trawl minutely through the last 100 days of forum posts to make sure I don't repeat something. Good grief.
This one is an outrage - someone should take the medal back off her

" We had 120 paid staff managing our volunteer marshals"
WTF???
120 PAID staff for a race .......... my god............

Well one thing that doesnt add up are the times of the mum and dad.

Well the "Brighton One" still has her result in the official Brighton marathon.

What a foolarse woman! You can't win them both as they're separate races.
Anyone think any different? I expect someone will, as there's people who will argue black is white on here.
I think she should have gone back and run the first half again.
They are the same on Stevie Wonder's piano keyboard.

Prizes eh!
Can't say I'm too bothered about them myself. The vouchers sit in the rack until my wife uses them to get herself something.
