have entered the kielder marathon on 6 oct not sure if I will make it round have done a bit of training but not what I had planned ,just ran a half in 1.50 and have done 2 long runs of 19 miles ,been getting tight hamstrings and glutes after 15 miles and I guess the question is do defer or give it a go

In my very humble opinion I would always say give it a go just take it easy and don't try and race it. My only reservations would be...
whats your regular weekly mileage?
What was your build up to 19 miles , might this explain the pain and tiredness?
your half times better than mine but your shortage of long runs could see you struggle a bit but hey it's only a struggle !!
the best of luck whatever you decide .
If it starts to hurt then it will remind you that next time you will have to take the training more seriously.

Hi Steve,
There is a very simple solution to working out whether or not you are ready for your first marathon.
Stand naked in front of a mirror and look down ...... if you see a pair .... then youre ready.
Man up!
Yours faithfully,
Mr A.
That all sounds fine to me - I ran a marathon in may on the back of two 20M runs and am planning on doing the same for beachy head.
Provided you've got the pair Mr a mentions you'll b reet.
Damn straight Crocman
after taking mr A advice,I will be going for it just going to go slow and get head round just wish I got a couple of twenty mile runs in,started training in march but with illness and holidays I messed it up I manged to run over 15 miles six times but with being 1st one my gut felling say last 8 mile are going to hurt any advise on the last 8 would be great .
I don't think there is much doubt that you will get round the course Steve. Very few people actually fail to do so in a marathon, and your preparations are certainly up to it. It will get hard going after the 20 mile mark, but you just have to switch your brain off and keep moving at this point.
10-9-8...Finish!
Bet those other 7.2 miles just fly by, Jindalee!
The key is not to get swept along with the tide, it is so easy to go far too fast for the first ten, and you have plenty of time to regret it if you do.
Run your race, not the guy next to you. In effort terms the half way is probably 15/16 so you have to feel fairly easy there, and at that stage you must not be breathing hard.
So my suggestion is pick a pace in advance that feels very slow - slower than either 19 and at least 10% slower than your half, memorize splits, and try to hold it, slowing down if you reach any check mark early - Which gives your head something to do.
Running form deterioration is also important, so actively try to land your feet softly, to reduce leg damage as long as you can.
Well I did it,found it hard after 18 miles and after 22 was about done the hills were the killer crawled in at 5 10 going take a few days to recover then will think about next goal.
Well done Steven!
Good man Steven, well done !!
