Does anyone know about the French License that the organisers require you to have? I've had a look at the French Athletics Federation website but I'm not clear on what i need?
I think you only need the French License if you are French. For anyone else I think you just need the medical certificate (which I must remember to get done). Am stressing the "think" part as am not 100% sure.
Correct - you need either a licence (French federation) or a medical certificate. Same for all French races as it's part of the insurance conditions. In over 15 races in France I've never heard of any instance over the med certificate being scrutinised that closely.
I know of plenty of, ahem, other people who just photocopy the same forged letter every year, or get Dr D Duck / Dr M Mouse etc to sign it. Never once paid a doctor to do it at any rate.
Mont Blanc marathon is my favourite race of the year. This photo from the MB website which captured me on the descent from the Col des Possettes is one of my all time faves. Have done it four times (and the Cross twice) and managed to secure a place again for next year. Just missed 5 hours by 19 seconds this year, so an obvious target for 2014. Will sign up for the 80k the year after if I manage it.
Dan A - that is a cracking time! I took cnsiderably longer but it is just an amazing place to run. Think i spent way too much time at the watering holes.
Cheers for the answers - the French License looked awkward to find / get! At least I just concentrate on the Med Certificate
Dan A - whats the cross like? I saw something on another forum saying that "Your best marathon time would be a good time for the cross". Do you think that holds true?
carlitoburrito - the Cross is brilliant. Tough but manageable for all levels. My quickest time is 2.30 off a marathon PB of 2.45. My gf broke 4 hours this year for the first time in four attempts but has a marathon time of 4.15. Double your half marathon PB is probably a better guide.
Chutney Locker - Looks like I may be Billy no mates for this race so a bit of pre race nerve calming in the local tavern from other RW entrants might be welcome!! As far as shoes go the plan is Salomon Ultra 2's.
Ref the French Licence - I got one for the TDS this year. Basically amongst other things it insures you against the cost of needing to be rescued from the mountains (not only French ones) if needed during the race - as mountain rescues are not free, and many 'normal' travel / medical etc insurances do not cover you if you are taking part in a race.
So check your cover if you want to be sure, otherwise just live with the possibiltiy of having to pay for the chopper if it comes to it.
Chutneylocker - i have a camelbak octane 18 which does the job very well. Along the route at the drink stations there is always loads to eat and drink and re-fil water bottles etc.
I'm booked to fly to Geneva on the afternoon of the Wed 25th then back on the Sunday. This might change though as someone might drive down with me instead to support.
gutted at not being able to make it over there to watch these events this year! would love to attempt the cross one year. not sure i am ready for the marathon at those altitudes!
Good luck with Liverpool Cheshercat. I'm really looking forward to the weekend in Chamonix. Not doing the distance I originally wanted to do but on the other hand it will allow me to run on a few other days on some of the trails.
Flying into Geneva on Wednesday morning by the way in case anyone wants to chum up and travel together to Chamonix..
Praying flights aren't disrupted out of London tomorrow with these air traffic control strikes.... if anyone knows a good place to drink in Chamonix please let me know where and when you will be there!

I've entered the marathon. Had thought about the 80km but a bit too far for me! .
You did well to get a place in the marathon, registration was carnage with the site crashing.
I'm in for the 80km!
It was all a bit mad, entered the second it opened and then the games began. Both races are run in the most fantastic scenery.
Very much looking forward to the scenery!
Rumrunner - be good to have another Brit there, the results last year looked very, very French.
Sot sure how much any of you are paying for a doctor to sign off the medical cert, but i was charged £15.50. Thought that was very reasonable.
Hey,
I got a place in the Cross event.

Any ideas?

Assuming my med certificate passes of course

Dan A - cracking times indeed! That picture is awesome too, love being in the high mountains.
So a question on shoes - any recommendations for the 80k?

Rumrunner - I couldn't talk anyone else into it either so will see you there!

Backpack question - which of the Salomon packs would you recommend for the 80km? Or alternatives from other brands.
Thanks!

A pre-race beer sounds like a very good idea!
Just out of interesting, when are folk planning to arrive if you've already decidecd?

I’ve also booked flights for Weds/Sun. Flying out of Gatwick @ 0810 and the return from Geneva @ 1700….
Had to scale down to the 10km due to injury
Rumrunner, Sorry to hear you have an injury.

How is everyones training going? not long now and how quick has come round.
Have the liverpool marathon this weekend which is part of my training for chamonix.

I'll be in chamonix the saturday before but happy to meet up for a drink before the race.
Good stuff... closer to the time maybe we can coordinate beers for those who are reading this forum post.
