Oh do listen to the good advice here and ignore those stats. They're rubbish as a strategy. Going out too hard will lose you a lot of time in the second half.
My HM PB last year was 1:24:01. I went out with the aim of running Sub 3 (was happy to get any time under 3:05 really) even split Marathon and managed 1:29:37 at halfway and finished in 3:00:36.
I got GFA and was moved in London this year due to higher numbers than usual. It wouldnt surprise me to see the times change for 2017.
PS: I've been injured and not done enough training this year, so I am hoping to run sub 3 in even splits at London in 2 weeks. If I remember I'll come back and let you know how it went.
A) I wasn't prepared to how hard the last 6km would be.
That should be a sticky at the top of the marathon threads!
Well done hitting the target (well, the original one, gets you a GFA). If the headwind was that bad it would have wrecked a marginal sub 3 attempt I would think. Better conditions on the next one, and knowing what to expect after 20 should see you OK for sub 3.

How'd it go Literatin?
Ooh, just remembered this thread: 1:28:23 + 1:29:39 = 2:58:02.
Nice one! I will take that next Monday. Too many butterflies in my stomach. I am bricking it!
I managed 1:28:16 + 1:29:49 for 2:58:05. We must have been fairly close Lit.
Yep:
I managed 3:04:46 on the day. Just under 3:05, so I am chuffed!
Their was a nice tailwind the first half, which made it pretty smooth going. However, the headwind in the second half made it pretty tough work.
Thanks for the advice. Sub 3 next time!
Well done the sub 3:05 - the fact we all want to know is how you paced it!?
Your time for a first marathon is great so I am sure you will run sub 3 next time.
Well my pacing was horrific. On the day I had planned on pacing a 1:28 first half and a 1:31 second to try and finish below 3 hours.
That didn't happen. I actually ran a 1:27 first half, followed by a 1:37 second. Two reasons for this:
A) I wasn't prepared to how hard the last 6km would be.
I had a 20mph tailwind the first half and a 20mph headwind the second half.
Sub 3 next time- fingers crossed!

I also forgot:
C) A quick portaloo stop!
May take a few Imodiums next time.
Can anyone recommend a good marathons to do in August / September?
Toilet stops are a killer. Fortunately I've never had to stop.
