28 miles on Monday for me and the legs weren't as willing as I'd have liked them to be but amazingly I wasn't as crippled the next day as I thought I would be. Even managed to run round an agility course and have just done a short run this morning.
I think I have running fever madness. I have just entered the Plusnet Yorkshire marathon on October 8th as a qualifier for Comrades 2018. Having never run Comrades before it all seems a bit odd. I might say never again
We have just phoned our travel insurance company. I am apparently not covered during the race itself. Presume I ought to be. Who do other people use?
After finishing my x2 marathons in two weeks, its the Malvern Hills Ultra on Saturday for me. I'm doing the 45m (was 50m). I'm hoping for good weather and dry so I can just run in road shoes. This will be my first non-road ultra (I have only ever done Comrades), and I think that the hills and navigation are going to be an interesting challenge!
This weekend was a monster: - 3.5 hrs Sat AM / 1.5hrs Saturday PM - 8hr Bike Sun AM+PM - 2.5hrs Mon AM / 1hr Mond PM - 0hrs Tues... ;-)
I have also booked my flights out to Durban with Emirates: Depart BHX - DBX 21:40 Wed 31/05/2017- 07:10 , then DBX - DUR 10:00 - 16:25 Thurs 01/06/2017 I'm staying until Tuesday 6th, then flying to Dubai for a few days on the 18:40 flight.
Looking forward to catching up with everyone pre / post race. I might not do the bus tour as I did it last year (on the down hill), but definitely up for: ParkRun Sat AM Dinner Sat PM Post-race breakfast on Mon AM Bruce Fordyce on Mon PM
I missed the Monday activities last year. I'm also hoping to do some of Durban on Friday as I just didn't get the chance last year.
Southern Snail - Re Insurance I just added an additional with SportsCoverDirect - £15.12.
Bike It - will we see you in Durban or PM? Hoping things come good for you soon and that you can launch the attack I know you are capable of next year like a Falcon HTV-2
Mr Z you said 9:15 bus tour in an earlier post - is it the standard Comrades one 'cos I think it leaves at 8:45 - don't be late now it takes circa 6 hours so they won't wait for you! (PS I'm Spartacus!)
Bike It, I think you are being very sensible and I wish you luck in injury recovery.
Mm, insurance. Must sort that... the insurance that I get free with my Nationwide bank account only covers Europe.
lowrez: please, to stop my head exploding, next time you produce the list: "parkrun". Thank you! P.S. I'm arriving Thursday leaving Monday.
caashford, we must look out for each other on that flight from Dubai. It's rather fun as the Comrades runners gradually congregate near the gate.
Split 24 miles for me today (5.5 this morning to work, then work->home->club->club run, then 3 miles jog home after socialising). New shoes (my very last pair of VivoBarefoot Neos, bought before they stopped making them) rubbed a hole in the top of my foot - I'll have to see if there's a seam that can be trimmed a bit, as I was planning to maybe wear them for Comrades...
Mugg & Bean Breakfast - yes, probably.
Think I'll pass on the tour on Friday. Yes it would be sort of nice to scare myself with the hills, but six hours is a big chunk out of the day.
Think I'm on the same Emirates flight too. Also up for parkrun and possibly Mugg and Bean, assuming that they will have more to offer me than dry toast and black coffee.
Monday Mugg & Bean Breakfast (just turn up from 9:00am onwards nothing
overly formal it’s “just” a café with a wonderful menu with a heap of UKish
Comrades runners descending upon it wearing their UK T-Shirts or the Comrades
goody bag one or indeed anything you damn well please, group photo around 11:00
then stroll down the beach front, even splash your toes in the Indian Ocean on
the way, to Bruce’s after party at 12:30)
caashford, Debra Bourne, Becca7
Monday Bruce Fordyce After Party (12:30 till 17:00 R550 per person California
Dreaming Restaurant, 150 O. R Tambo Parade, Dairy Beach, Durban)
caashford
Ha ha - it is 8 because Bruce does his own route tour at 9 (or at least he did last year) and he runs parkrun (one word SS all lower case!) http://www.parkrun.co.za/northbeach/
I think there are two Friday bus tours this year - Dannir and I are on the 7:30am with Slow Duck doing the commentary, and one at 8:45. And I'm up for parkrun too.
morning all. great to hear Lowrez will be at the start. i have had an email regarding my C pen charity start so can start with my husband...a week today will be my injection so am hoping to be painfree sometime after that.. we are on the *:45 bus I believe and we will be at the parkrun as well if I can be added to the list...getting excited about the whole trip even though the race is going to be a long bus ride for me
SS.. last year I just got the add on from sports cover to cover my ironman....this year my annual policy was due up so i took out my annual cover with them so will be covered for any racing i might on might not do..
parkruns in South Africa are held at 8am to avoid the worst of the heat. In parts of Australia they are at 7am for the same reason!
seren nos: great re. your C-pen start. Good luck for the injection working well. And yes, lots of people at North Beach parkrun - quite a lot of them walking and at least one person regularly completing in a wheelchair.
N.B. anyone wanting to buy a copy of my parkrun book, I'll have a few with me - please let me know in advance so I can make sure to keep it for you.
And if anyone would be willing to talk about coping with running injuries for my NEW book at some point, please let me know!
I won't be coming down to Durban or PMB Lowrez. I'm a contractor so I effectively have to pay myself to take holiday as I can't bill it to my client. Plus, if I'm there I will register to get the T-shirt and hat, if I register I'll probably run the first bit, if I run the first bit I'll try to complete, if I try to complete then ......
I'm not sure what i'll be able to join before the race, have a 30 hour or so trek over from Chicago, don't get in until Friday afternoon. Jet lag willing i'll be at parkrun.
Bike It: I hear you! I registered last year and collected the T-shirt etc. because (a) it was the second time I'd paid for a Champion Chip and I wanted to get the thing. (I entered for the 2014 before coming of my bike and tearing my posterior tibial tendon in late 2013); (b) by putting my number on I was able to get into the start pen and have that experience.
I stopped myself trying to run (when I had only just been able to walk North Beach parkrun, slowly, the previous day) by going to Pietermaritzburg in unsuitable footwear and clothes, and by NOT taking my Champion Chip with me to Pietermaritzburg. - Oh, and by having agreed to drive Terry's hire car back to Durban!

Morning all...forgot to mention ss that sports direct we're good about my hip bursitis...will still insure me for the race...just increased the excess if any claim is related to the bursitis..
