Managed my first 12k in two months yesterday. Heavy going - much work to do if I'm to complete the Mablethorpe Marathon on 1st October. Entered yesterday to try and boost my motivation to get out and train!
Anyone else in here doing the Thunder Run this weekend? I'm a late substitute. Looks like the weather forecast is for a bit of everything - rain, sun, actual thunder, possibly plagues of frogs...
Thunder Run - the mud! The mud! Argh! In the end, we had sun at the start and finish and 14 hours of rain in the middle. Total mud bath. I had assumed 4 x 10km laps over 24 hours would be fairly straightforward. I hadn't allowed for rain, mud, lack of sleep, forcing yourself to eat at all hours to keep going, and spooky things in the forest in the middle of the night. I'd say it's right up there with one of the toughest challenges I've ever done - I enjoyed (most) of it due to a team with a great attitude - but I'm not doing it again!
Well done RR. I absolutely hated that event when I did it and that was even with what was comparatively good weather so I'm another in the never again camp.
I think it could have been positively enjoyable if the weather had been better, but I heard a few people complaining that there were fewer facilities this year - less and more expensive food options, portaloos instead of toilet blocks etc.
After a bit of a disappointment this year, I've been in two minds about entering the down run next June but was going to wait 'til the entries open to make up my mind either way. However during an idle moment at work yesterday I found myself browsing the flight options on Expedia which make me thing some part of my brain wants to go anyway
Hi all, sorry for butting in with an unrelated question - thought you all might be able to help. I;m trying to find a flat fast rd 100k between November & March in the UK / Ireland. Anybody know of any? Much obliged. Ta
The Canalathon has a 100k option and isn't road but the surfaces are largely good (one bit was a little muddy) and it's flat and potentially fast. March time.
I had to come up with some excuse so that Danni and I would not have to make a dual appearance , actually, if I had been more on the ball at JB they were letting people jump the queues if connection time was short. It wasn't that obvious though; I thought it was locals being rude and pushy!
TM - There is a UK 100k championship run each year, I imagine fitting your bill so as to get good times for the elites, I think it has just run this year, don't think they have got next sorted yet.
Are you thinking of 2 Oceans next year Becca? I think Danni is going, not sure I want the disappointment of failing again though? We might all coincide in one place one day
No Two Oceans for me next year. It was good to go to Cape Town and I must go back sometime as I had no idea that they had penguins at Boulders Beach (tourism fail - I didn't do any reading up as to what there was to see). The race itself was very good but no Comrades. I've got the Born to Run 40 miler in Llanelli that day.
Thanks - I'm guessing what the link will lead to and, as I'm likely to have that as an earworm for the full 40 miles in Llanelli I will avoid getting it as an earworm now.

SS: toe is feeling a lot better now, thankfully.
Terry: good luck with your training - onward!

What happened to you JK?
What fights are you thinking of?

Found myself getting sick at halfway and had to bail out

My normal route is Ireland -> Heathrow -> Jo'burg -> Durban. Prices are up compared to this year but no doubt some offers will show up in due course.
That's a lot of flights.
JK - have you figured out the underlying cause of the sickness?
I went Manchester -> Paris -> JB -> Durb last year, have done Man -> Dubai -> Durb too, much of a muchness. I usually just pick the cheapest.
TM - 100k, flat, not trail, almost impossible I would say unless you can find one of those 400m track crazy events.
