I have the same problem with my Timex watchstrap minging like hell - and despite sticking it in the washing machine it still smells. think it's mainly caused by bacteria breaking down the skin that gets lodged in the nylon strap.
the only thing I have found to cure it is to wear it sea swimming - ideal when wetsuit training for triathlon - as the salty water does get rid of the smell......
wonder if a dishwasher cycle would help??
as for Flashflo - I would think it should survive a cold wash as it's mainly nylon so don't see a problem there - but remember to take the bladder out first!!
After your run you could always shower with your Forerunner, as it's waterproof: IEC 60529 IPX7 standards (submersible in one meter of water for up to 30 mins.) according to Garmin.
or you could try spraying it with anti-bacterial Fabreeze.
I like the subtle mention that you have the 301 Ed. I think my wife would either laugh at me or leave me if I mentioned that I would like one!
I was wondering if the strap would survive a machine wash (don't Garmin say not to wash it?) and whether it actually gets rid of the stink. Febreze is an interesting idea.
Isn't there also some method for getting rid of smells from sweaty kit by soaking them in bicarb of soda or something like that?
I've not got a forerunner but always found that antibacterial handwash works really well in getting bad smells out of the nylon & fabric webbibg of my other equipment.
Er, talking of the wriststrap, does anyone else think that the design is pretty rubbish? Having to prise those little spring things off everytime I want to recharge is a real pain! Also, last night whilst running in a club group I was jostled and one of the springs, er, sprang, never to be seen again. Anyone know of a dealer (in London) where replacements might be got? Or would a jeweller do it anyway?
Had the same problem with my forerunner wriststrap. Didn't wash it, but I now wear it over a terry sweatband and the pong has faded away and not come back.
My 501 cleans itself automatically when setup on the autowash setting. Also makes a nice cup of tea for you 5 mins after the end of the run. I hear the 601 is set to include an inetgrated shower and sauna function...

if its like my 301 then the pins attaching the strap can be squeezed in to shorten them & pop out.
i've also washed my flashflo case in a gentle wash too.
