When I was 17 I went to a feminist conference and asked one of the speakers whether it was REALLY worthwhile not wearing a wedding ring or changing your surname cos these were just symbols
she explained to me why symbols matter, and I was convinced
23 years later I didn't change my name although I do wear a ring (I like gold) but I now wonder if the 17 yo me was right - they are just symbols and I still end up doing all the bliddy ironing in my pinny

But for other people, not getting married or getting maried makes a lot of difference. Sometimes women have to give up their jobs, because it isn't possible to work and be married in the eyes of some males
