Not done Halstead myself but some of my clubmates dispute the rumour that it is up to 20 mins slower than London, indeed 2 have PBs set in Halstead that they can't seem to match at London.
I'd say on the downside Halstead has undulations and in recent years has been held on a warm day. On the upside there is no conjestion or undue hanging about at the start plus being local you avoid having to be up too early and travelling etc. Also the 2 FLMs I've done have also been on warm days, luck of the draw really! Think you are right to have a look at the course and then decide.
I'll wait until Weds night and club FLM draw, then I'll know whether to focus on Halstead full time.
I am definitely up for this one too. Entry form is now on the website, and shortly they say the RW online entry will be available too.
Living in Sudbury, this is only 8 miles away so is my local marathon, and after having run this twice before would recommend it to anyone, my fastest time here is faster than my fastest flm time too!
Think I am going to use Bungay Marathon as a warmup for this race as well as the Bury 20 which is end of Feb.
5 FLM rejections and rejected again in the club ballot! Looks like plan B springs into action Shakespear on the 7th followed by Halsted on the 14th. that should sort out the pring running calendar.
I did this last year on a last minute decision 4 weeks after Rotterdam and ran only 4 minutes slower than my Rotterdam PB time so I think its a fast course mind you I like hills!!
Flynn you could always offer to go training with those with the places and above you on the waiting list and "help" them over the rough tracks and icy roads.
The current Mrs F won one of the places in club ballot now she wont walk down stairs in front of me i dont know why!!
Nick I find Marathons are the best motivation for the training. last year after the two spring runs I went to Switzerland in the summertime to do the Davos Alpine marathon (what a fantastic event that is) and Beachy head in the Autumn. Once youve got the miles in your legs for the spring runs its relatively easy to keep topped up for the whole year. Plus I dont do many more races Maybee the North Downs and a couple of 1/2 maras but thats all. Which probabbly explains why i cant seem to get under 3.45.
Tell your friends at work that you are doing it and stare blankly into the middle distance and they will thence regard you with a heightened respect...or think you're a berk...
So Mark...are you gonna do BOTH marathons in under 4?
The Runners World entry has now been registered for the Halstead Marathon 2006. Unfortunately you need RW+ access to get to it (which I don't) and I shall investigate whether this restriction can be lifted. When it does I shall create the "offical" threads for the marathon.
More information about the Halstead Marathon 2006 can be found on our shiny new website which has tons of information including pictures, past results, course map, entry forms and much other stuff:
For the restriction to be lifted I believe people will need to subscribe to the mag. I had this problem year before last and could only see events about 2-3 months ahead.
I'd love to join you guys this year however I'm not going to be ready to do a marathon yet. Perhaps next year!
corridore Yeah hoping to run the shakespear quick (well quick for me new pb and all that) Then attempt 3.59.59 at Halstead or just see how it goes but its good to challenge oneself. Managed Rotterdam and Halstead last year both sub 4 so it should be achievable??

I did this one for the first time this year. I chose it over the Bungay M. (I can only manage one a year).
Yes, its the same Sudbury Town. They always seem to get to the final but always lose, at least they are consistant!!
Halstead is great, its not the easiest course, but who wants to run the easy ones all the time, not me.
Did 16 miles club run today in 1:54, so training going well too.

In 2003 I did Nottingham in Sept, Dublin in Oct, then Luton the first week of Dec, and I ended up getting a PB by over 12 mins at Luton!
Thats why I am considering running Bungay in April and then Halstead in May this time.

3.45 Mark. I'd love to get under 4.00. Maybe one day, with a tail wind on the downside of the hills.
The back-to-back marathons is good for a laugh.

Thanks for sorting out the online entry, I much prefer using this method.
Hoping to edge a bit nearer to the sub 3, should be close, and hopefully will just dip below.
Have just started a new thread based on the new race listing for the 2006 race.

Thanks for creating the new thread for me.
