Weldon Johnson who paced Paula is pretty chuffed as he ran a PB too. Apparently, when he told Paula they had just run a 5:22 mile (about 23miles?) she turned round and said "What???" then just took off - the next one was 5:09! He hosts a website www.letsrun.com with his twin brother, a 2:24 runner. If you go there you'll see a link to the Chicago Tribune article - which isn't half as bad as Foster made out and is quite flattering on the whole.
Absolutely amazing, Paula, and just as good on the Grandstand rerun.
Who would think that watching a marathon - as opposed to running one - could be such a compelling experience? Both races - men and women - were absolutely superb.
What a great time this is for female runners in this part of the world; between Paula and Sonia O'Sullivan, we are spoiled for positive role models.
So it's Sonia in New York next! Meanwhile, hats off to Paula - including that blue thing that was on her head for half the race!
Eccentric? So what's the Americans' problem with that. I'd like them to try naming ONE big achiever who wasn't also a bit of an oddball! The silly thing about it is that Paula comes across as a nice friendly no-nonsense British lass who would probably just shrug and say "Live and let live" when it comes to American weirdnesses. When it comes down to it, which country invented the dry-fried egg-white omelette or no-win, no-fee litigation? I'm sure it wasn't us.
My kids didn't think it was a bit unusual that Paula was wearing a funny hat, sunspecs and gloves, and I was delighted to note that my own need for gloves during winter runs (even on T-shirt days) isn't wimpish.
most incredible thing I have seen in ages - could not see much of finish as something got into my eyes! Had a rather nice bottle of Chilean Merlot ready to celebrate with - somehow it had dissapeared by the 5 mile mark, luckily I had another one in the kitchen!
I twisted my ankle in the Nike 10K so felt a bit of a forum fraud with not running for several weeks. But am back now, ready to dispense nuggets of wit and wisdom to all and sundry...
Yeah, right!
You're right of course. Paula's hat was absolutely common sense, as the head is where one loses most body heat. But let's face it: in the USA, if there is a choice between making an intelligent choice and having nice hair, people tend to go for the hair...
Glad it wasn't anything worse, Dalya. Trust you're back on the move as well as back on the forum. I've had to do forum cold turkey a couple of times in the past when injured too.
I'm back to training now, V-rap, though it's pretty appalling how quickly one detrains. Am trying to be philosophical, working on shorter, consistently quicker running, and doing a lot of weightlifting and core work, as I thinks these will help me to avoid some injuries -I hope.
Not sure what was so eccentric about the hat and the shades - most of the runners seemed to be wearing them! I kept thinking that her hat was going to fall off, and I was yelling at the TV "Pull your hat down Paula" as I could see it gradually slipping up her head, just before it popped off!
Mind you, the compression socks are a tad unusual, but if it works for her then good luck to her.
I couldn't find the Chicago Tribune article (or at least not one that slagged off Paula) on the Let's Run web site, but there is a forum style thing similar to this where she is described as a "whiner" and "The Antichrist", as well as a "selfish jerk" for not having any children. What the heck is it with these people??
great run. Astonishing time. Made us all feel much better aftr Kingston as we all thought we had run hard! Surprised the pace maker ran a PB. he seemed to be just jogging along side and directing traffic half the time ... might explain why he disappeared out of sight when she picked it up through the tunnel though.
Actually, I hate the man more than any alive but I don't want him accused of that. I may have accused him of being arrogant and a total blinkered silly man, but my solicitor had asked me to point out that this is ABSOLUTLEY not the case. He is a nice man.
I HATE Man U, but I can't believe that of him. he hasn't done this.

Paula finished 22nd overall. Awesome.
Amanda P got 2.17.20 congrats to her too.
Not sure about that hat though:)

These Americans- they're all eccentrics..
like something out of Monty Python!!
There's nothing like a bad loser..and the highest placed American woman was ??????
I was curious about her saying she needed a toilet break at 22 miles. Not exactly private with n million people watching
You read my mind. How did you know?
