You'll have to sort out the lumpy bit - it's a blister under the nail.
Sterilise a needle (hold it in a flame for a few seconds) then go in from the top under the nail, and burst the blister. Apply gentle pressure to the top of the nail, and drain the fluid out.
Not nearly as yucky as it sounds, and it eases the throbbing almost immediately.
Have to agree with Nessie, had a blister under two toe nails and used the same method. Very satisfying watching it drain, and, surprisingly it didn't hurt at all(sorry WS and everyone). Have only lost one of the two nails - and wear that with pride.
I have just officially got rid of the lastest li'l bit of icky. <<<beam>>> Snipped it off not five minutes ago, I did. More than a year after the damage was done, but take heart, similarly affected ones - you won't necessarily lose them coz I didn't did I?
My toes are now a lovely SMOOTH Jelly Bean green.
As is a tiny patch of carpet, but that's another story.
Interested in this thread as I have just lost my first.
I pulled mine off 2 nights ago. It was still attached at the base and I have to say I nearly fainted at the thought. But it had to go as it was floating free everywhere else.
I've had black nails and they haven't fallen off just taken about a year to grow out.
My two lil piggies (excuse the phrase Mrs P.) fell off a while ago and having grown back they don't feel very secure, I must say. I feel a good yank and they would be orf again.
One of my big toenails is completely detatached on 3/4 of the nail but it firmly attached on the right quarter The loose bit keeps flapping up so I think I may have to start taping it til it all grows out or cut it off
But falling off nails are a badge of honour for runners and I like freaking people out by showing them to people
Toes all lovely until I followed a 1/2M with hill-intervals-from-hell the other week, learning from experience the purpose of the recovery week (not just for wimps). The electrically powered pedicure kit things (try the aptly-named Boots) are good for precision nail neatening. What a shame the season of open toed strappy sandals is drawing to a close. I may have toenails missing, but the bits of nail left behind are quite exquisite, and worthy of display.

once he stands on yer toes it'll sort all your problems out!
WS keels over at thought of shoving needle under toenail.
Left one's not too bad - might have got away with that one.
But the right one sounds funny!
¦oD
It does! It feels kinda dead, and when I tap it it sounds hollow and plasticy.
Jj, the one that sounds funny will fall off (in about a month) but you'll have half of a nice new one growing underneath when it does :-)
:oD
Fankyew Pink, I knew I was normal.
keyboard mop in aisle four!
:oD
They're growing out rather than off - the icky-looking bit is now about three quarters up the nail, with nice new strong nail following it up.
I reckon the last icky bit can be cut off in about three or four months' time? Which will mean they'll have been icky for more than a year!
