My mental picture of the London Marathon from the early days is of Jimmy Savile staggering along in his bizarre get-up and me thinking that this man is the same age as my staid, conservative, definitely non-running father. JS did raise loads for Stoke Mandeville hospital I believe.
I read the same article and did wonder if he meant 217 half marathons, as I know he has done plenty. But as Eva said, he has done a shed load of races for Stoke Mandeville so it is very possible that he has run 217 full marathons as well as all those halfs.
He has an incredibly efficient running style - he keeps his feet so low to the ground that he hardly appears to be moving and yet he did some respectable times. I once saw him trip over the painted white line in the middle of the road!

He is getting on a bit. Think he might be a tad confused.
Jimmy article
He is 80 something so that is 60 years running under his belt - so a mere 3.6 marathons per year - quite doable.
(You can tell I am really bored to have looked that up!!)
try again
"Generally, I'm not very interested in art unless it lives, breathes and wears a short leather skirt."
LOL.
Young at heart or what??
He looks really old these days though. Saw him last year and he looks older than some of my clients who have at least 10 years on him.
I'll never forgive him for this.
NEVER.
'ows about this then!
Why didn't he choose my letter all those years ago!? (
Debster
You can't say THAT and disappear. Reveal all.
;o)
Thanks - I need a drink after that!
i believe he still volunteers as a porter at the royal marsden.
