What under pants do all you runners in the know use! I'm finding my cotton "trunks" get beyond damp and there must be something better, what is it and where do you get it?
My OH wears NZ merino wool pants which have fantastic wicking ability (apparently!). He is a runner and a canoeist and uses them for both sports (Only after washing obviously!) and thinks they are fab.
They are not the kind of pants that I'd be 'wicking' off him though as they are TOTAL passion killers ;-)
If you don't fancy going commando you can get wicking undies from Helly Hansen or Lowe Alpine. Should be able to get them from any good outdoor sports store. Cotswolds, F&T etc.
you can get lycra running shorts without the padding of bike shorts - loads of brands sell them - go to a running shop and check
the only problem I find with commando is the seams on some lycras aren't in the best place so can rub on long runs so I use seamfree undrecrackers - George at Asda do some trunk style ones but as I bought about 5 pairs last time i don't know if they still do them but they do the trick and stop seams rubbning
the best lycras for commando have either a diamond or panel crotch - keeps the seams out of the way
commando if you are wearing proper running shorts, the ones with a liner in them. If you need or want more swingage control then lycra shorts underneath help. I have done a couple of marathons with this arrangement and it is fine.
Last night I ran using a pair of those short that have the "string vest" type inner and they seemed fine. This was only a 4 mile run (due to knee 'mare) and I didn't notice any likely problems.
the big problem with standard type runners with the nutsack liner is that they don't stop thigh chafage for those of us with bigger thighs - lycra shorts are the best way to prevent this
Running with the nutsack liner don't always stop thigh chaffage - lycra shorts help prevent this. Ronhill sell pairs for about £10 - £15 or you could wait and buy a cheap pair from Adli when they are in stock.
I used to do long runs with running shorts with no problem but then chaffing started and tried lots of different shorts but I now use lycra shorts underneath or you could try the Nike Dry Fit shorts (I use these on their own and have had no problem so far)
This is another running problem that everyone has different solutions for, you need to find what suits you while out running.

COMMANDO!
It's the only way to go ;-)
No chafing, no vpl, no wedgie.

I may risk commando this evening on a short training session this evening and I'll try to let you know how I get on.
I should imagine.
I don't know why it's all gone bold, though.
On the lycra front - I have some biking short and they have a padded crotch. It doesn't seem like the right kind of thing for running. Am I right?
Also, back to the wicking stuff, where can you get a good deal on wicking under-crackers?
£12/pair of undies seems a lot to me. I picked up 5 wicking tops for less (last years line).

Cotton shreddies/undercrackers are not a good idea.
Try Nike shorts with a liner or Adidas with similar.
Try a little bit of Bodyglide at top of thighs as well to prevent chafing.
It will work.
