I sprained my ankle about 6 weeks ago, and it swelled up like a grapefuit. I didn't run at all for 3 weeks, then slowly on the flat for the past 3 weeks. It doesn't hurt at all now but is still just slightly swollen. I went skiing at the weekend (we live in Zurich) and while the joint doesn't hurt, the slight swelling meant my ski boots were unbearably uncomfortable to wear. What I want to know is whether taking anti inflammatories is likely to make any difference at this point - I prefer not to take them as they usually make me feel nauseous but can't bear not to get out there when there's a ton of fresh snow.

Hi!
Anti-inflammatories do not reduce swelling. They reduce inflammation, these are two different things. The best things you can do to reduce the swelling are rest, ice, compress, elevate. Gentle exercises with the foot raised will also help pump the excess fluid as well as draining it away. Just do the old alphabet in the air thing!

Hi Heidi
Is swelling not one of the 5 cardinal signs of inflammation?

I get very envious of you folks that live close to the big hills at this time of the year - especially with the great start to the season so far..........grrrrrr........
I saw some guys doing this at the weekend- they looked seriously fit.
Yes, the proximity of proper mountains covered in plenty of white fluffy stuff does compensate for the fact that there is virtually nowhere flat at all I can run around here. Used to live in leafy Middlesex and miss the BP time trial but not much else...
bastards the lot of you..........
