I bloody hate doing crawl - not only do I end up swallowing lots of water and not seeing where I am going, but I can do breast stroke considerably faster.
TMAP - in my four sprint tri's thus far there's been peeps doing breast-stroke, back stroke, and things I just can't put a name to. I can't do b/s to save myself so can't imagine doing b/s quicker than f/c, but suspect f/c is much quicker with the right technique (which btw escapes me). Other forumites have suggested some good books, and if your in London town Serpie Tri club run (yet-to-be-personally-tried) swim/tri sessions.
Chaos, I'm just going thru' some swim coaching this week... £30 down the local pool for 5 sequential nights of 30min sessions..
And its really paying off (only done 2 sessions so far) but can already bi-laterally breath (a first believe me!) and slowed things down alot and saving alot more energy with getting my body position right...
or very long arms and size 20 webbed feet ;o) ive decided today that tumble turns are a bag o shite, and I dont care if i cant do them cos people look stupid doing them anyway. fact!
Right - first lesson is booked for Tuesday evening next week.
I had a quick pre-lesson practice last night trying out some of the suggestions I've seen here - breathing both to left and right (I assume that's what you mean by bi-lateral), swivelling my head along the axis of the body rather than looking forwards too much, tensing the core muscles, etc. Amazingly it actually proved to be faster than my breaststroke which is the only stroke I've used before! However only managed about 12 metres each time before getting the breathing timing all screwed up.
Eyes were stinging as well - any recommendations for a decent pair of goggles? They seem to range from £8 to over £30 but there's no obvious reason why some are more expensive than others as they all say anti-fog/UV/etc.
Ta Spans. I'll look out for some - might possibly need girly ones as haven't got fat head & need narrow sunglasses. Not pink are they?!
Are you still thinking of heading up to the Ealing 50m pool? They have Adults-only swimming on Thursdays after 8pm. Let us know beforehand if you are as am v.close by.
Whereabouts are the baths that do the adult training?? When do they do them? Dont suppose you have a telephone number do you? (the pool's that is, not yours)
I taught myself to do crawl years ago and although I'm not particularly slow, my technique (as I laughingly call it) is all over the shop. Reckon if I could do it properly, it would probably be my strongest event. Would be nice to finish the first element towards the head of the field even if I do go backwards on the bike!!
Well, being an aussie, i was quite surprised over the lack of 50m pools when i first stepped off the boat. All pools at home are 50m except those that are found in the back yard. I am a member of two gyms now though and they both have 50 m pools. One in the city and the gym in Fulham has 3 pools, 2 of which are 50m.
Chimp I have only just seen your question- I did/do adult lessons at Morley on a Tuesday evening 9:00-10:00 after running club, sadly I have got a calf tear so am resting (apart from single handedly lugging my new chest freezer in to the cellar earlier) and won't be down for a bit. The rest of the time I tend to swim at Dewsbury, they have lane swimming early on Mon /Wed/Fri 7:00 - 9:00 a late swim at 8:30 on Fridays and an evening swim 6:00- 9:00 I think on Sundays, all with three lanes they are experimenting at the mo with the fast lane for crawl only- so I got the lane to myself for half an hour and then there were only two of us. The pool is 33 metres long- a bit odd.

But its worth getting Front crawl sussed - as when you do it is much faster than breast stroke
Still, whopped their **** on the bike and run though. he he
Either way, get out there and do it

The gym I use(I say with tears in my eyes) only has 15m pool!! How rubbish!
Going to have to use the local leisure centre for swimming sessions if I want to improve! Oh and a few hundred lessons!
33m is not so unusual..I don't think?
Better than west end one though - the Cannons one was the only pool around; it was 12m and kidney shaped. I now have a strong left arm and leg...
Could guarantee I'd get cramp every time I did one in a 25 metre pool with all the extra kicking off
