I already have a pair of speed one x socks...they're ok but not as good as bridgedale in my opinion. That and the ones I have won't come up high enough to put the chip over the top.
I normally run in these but also have these which go up higher so maybe worth a shot? as comfort is equal in both pairs...
Sally just makes me think of Yorkie bars with the not for girls thing!
Think I'm going to order the strap too that Gaz posted and see how that goes... it seems to cover the area between chip and skin completely so fingers crossed!

Yes - and hopefully it will be comfy, soft and stretchy too. Never have I considered my ankles more in one afternoon!
The chip can be taken off the strap. So instead of having the hook side facing in just pull the strap out and re-thread it so the softer, fuzzy side is closest to your ankle.
It won't feel as secure because it isn't gripping anything but it won't fall off either.
triathletes are used to wearing ankle strap chips so they can be worn for the swim bike and run - we mostly use neoprene ankle straps as already mentioned for comfort as we can be wearing them for a very long time during an Ironman event.
never had chafing with a neoprene strap so well worth investing in one
Used velcro straps for years, no problem and easier than the lace job. Wear as loose as possible as ankles will swell HM and beyond and should be ok. Industrial velcro does not separate without a bit fof force so 1-2cm should be fine. Loose is okay, tight will rub. Washington used a disposable chip last year and NY using this year. Made like the fasteners from FLM, about 4x as wide and threade through the laces. Hope the idea catches on as it saves a load of hassle all round. Good luck at GNR all
My, we have a lot of delicate flowers on here! Worn velcro straps numerous times, never had a problem. Just stays in place and doesn't move up and down, so no rubbing occurred. Maybe try some Vaseline beforehand or something?

Well mine arrived today... and it is soft and stretchy and is spot on so happy days!
The championchip for the Glasgow Half was on a velcro strap and I noticed it was chaffing a bit at the start but didnt notice it again until I got in the shower afterwards... Yeeeoooooooowwwww!!! I have a lovely scab on my ankle now...very attractive. For those worried about only having 1 or 2cm spare on the velcro, it shouldn't come off as it took a bit of faffing about to get it off my ankle at the end and I have long fingernails to hook under the end.
Velcro ankle straps are fine. Just make sure the chip is in the dimple between the ankle bone and achilles..should be fine - oh and put the smooth side against the skin!!! the spare velcro should stick to the rest of the strap, no??
They have been using these for ages in cross country races....
I had the same prob a few months back. Looked at the instructions after the race and I was wearing it wrong, maybe should have looked at it before!
Just ran the Robin Hood in Notts, bought a neoprene strap from this company called FR Systems (Google them). It came quick free delivery and was well comfy, no probs at all. It only cost about £2.50 and free delivery. Well worth it if you run a few of these 'Chipped' races a year like I do.
I've never had a problem with them at all - just make sure you have the soft side of the velco strap on the inside all the way round, and just tight enough so it doesn't bounce up and down. Also make sure the flat side of the championship itself is on the inside, then it won't touch your skin at all. Look closely at the picture on chip instructions they send out, and make sure you have it the right way round. Simples.
I had an ankle one last week at the Nottingham half and it was fine, I cant remember which bit I had against my skin. But once it was in position it was difficult to move it!

Stringy posted a piccy of the ID trainer tag on this thread.
I am guessing the chip would attach in a similar fashion and will be totally inobtrusive...
Gaz - have purchased said strap immediately and fingers crossed it comes in time! Suspiciously it had free delivery too....you never get that!
Cheers!
Can't be bad with free postage - They are pretty quick tho' so you should be ok.
Good luck with GNR

Slightly surprised this is such an issue TBH

Good luck everyone for the GNR.

Simon, if you had bothered to read the thread you would have realised the strap was not the norm

Which is why they sought advice.I did read through it, obviously not well enough. Terribly sorry.

Just GNR to go and I'm out for 2009.

I wore it on top of my socks, very comfortable - and no rubbing problems at all - in fact, I found myself looking down to check it was still on!
Good investment IMHO if you're doing ChampionChip timing runs...
