What? 5 under arm chins? Is that it? Blimey.

Like Moraghan said i thought they would be over hand, and then, wide spaced is harder still. As you can see i was never in the Army, but i thought you HAD to be super fit, or is this a bit of a myth to give the Army kudos?

    depends on the capbadge...

You gotta be a fit lad to be Para or Commando(RM) and maybe for a few other specialist jobs in other corps... Most of it is about a tought mental atitiude rather than raw fitness ...

I guess for a support arm, the average fitness would be something like...

    Run - 1.5mile around 9:30

    50 press ups 2 min

    50 sit ups 2min

    100m Jerry can walk

    and 10 full chinnies.

Think thats bad.. you wanna see the RAF!

I did basic training with the Paras , so I did all the extra fitness stuff before I went in (1988) but even with all that I was stiill exhausted. I broke my Femur and was invalided out before I finished training.

What we are on about here is the *basic* level of fitness needed to even begin the training - I saw kids who could barely make the bare minimum at the beginning and months later they were square shouldered rock hard atheletes. The more preperation you can do with fitness the more chance you'll have of hacking the training - what does people in is the hard physical training coupled with the lack of sleep and the endless long days . It's the little things that break new recruits - the bull , the stuggle to get all the kit in order for the inspection at the beginning of every day , all the time so tired you could sleep standing up.

So to make it much easier the level of fitness before you start is critical - you can do it with the minimum but why suffer?  I spent months training but if I was to do it again I'd train even harder.

Does anyone have complete details of the army basic fitness test? Or something similar.

Having just bought a new set of scales after the last ones died before Xmas, I have put on a stone and a half, broken 200lbs and would like to drop a bit (a stone and a half) but don't have all the gym type stuff access. So if there is anything I can do with sit ups, press ups etc, that would be good.

I am also having a crack at the paras 10 in September for a bit of fun and would like at least a shot of cracking two hours.

    Sorry to hijack!

Why don't you do circuit training? My first circuit is 11 exercises 60 seconds each(plank, tri-cep dips, burpees, striders, lunges w/ twist, power squats, squat raises, spiderman press-ups, bicep curls, shoulder press and jacknifes), My second circuit consists of 11 strength exercises e.g. press-ups, 60 seconds for each and in between the strength exercises I do 60 seconds of exercises to increase my heart rate e.g. burpees.

Try swimming as well this may benefit you more than running at the moment, unless your already used to running at over 200llbs.

    Good luck

Er, not sure wot all that lot is. I'll have a google, can't wait to find out what a spiderman press up is. I really need to get my core up to strength.

Already swim a bit but lost a bit of practice lately. They closed my local work pool!
