Slower week this week on the RW 4.30 schedule..................

Excellent, gives me a chance to catch up, I'm horribly conscious of the whole 9 weeks to go thing.

    *look away, chicken-related diversion coming*

Mark, one of mine is moulting too, I thought it was just because the battery farm had messed up her little body clock.  I hate seeing Lady Tottington bald and shivering, all I want to do is let her in and put her in front of the fire with a nice pile of calcium rich cheeese to help her grow some feathers back again pronto.

    *okay, normal service resumed*

It was so good to get out there this morning and do a decentish distance at long last.  Those times were stop/start, so it's not as if I just went out there and ran, but even so I'm pretty chuffed.  I didn't actually feel tired at the end, just conscious of the various unhappy bits filing complaints, but it's such progress compared with the last few weeks that it's really giving me reason to hope.

I'm stiffening up like a porn star now, but who cares I'm seeing Gary tomorrow so he can fix me ready for whatever Liz prescribes for next week.

Great news on the run hash..........you are probably icing and stretching as I speakimage

Had a 10 mile race this morning and was happy that the stomach bug had finally gone and I had eaten normally the yesterday.......went through first 6 miles in just under 53 mins and feeling ok ish even though there was some ice, slush and mud on the course but then at about 6 miles my legs just went..I had no energy and i really struggled to keep going...........my pace slowed down by about a min or more a mile..........I was so tempted just to stop.....so I was on for sub 88 mins and turned out just over 91 minsimage

I hadn't taken any gels or sweets as I thought i would be ok for a 10 mile race..........I'm hoping it was just the fact that i had a stomach bug all week  meant that i should have really stocked up with carbs last night and this morning..............

I got quite tearful after I got home but after 2 cheese toasties , a bath and a 1and a  1/2 hour sleep I'm feeling a bit better...will try and get back on schedule this week and move on.

(((Seren))) it's got to be just that your body is short of fuel after the stomach bug, especially as you felt so much better after a refuel and rest.

Good on you for running it at all after the way you've been feeling recently, and hope you feel better next week.

How about following a run/walk programme like Liz is suggesting for me, if only for a week or so?  I really feel the difference after just a minute of walking, I come back waaay stronger  for the next 20 minute run than if I'd just plodded on all the way

  • Options

I did a lot of run/ walking this time last year hash after being out for 4 months with an achillies problem..........I kept that up for about 6 months so that I wouldn't have a reoccurrence before the Ironman.........i have spent the time since august getting my running back up to pace.........

i will do a slow recovery run tomorrow and see how I feel and reasess the situation for the week.........Hopefully i will bounce back now as it was a tough one to restart withimage

Seren - hugs - but thats still a FABULOUS time!!! No way I could go that fast even when superfit!!! Hopefully after some normal eating and hydrating this week you will be back on top form.

Looks like generally everyone on here is back on the up..........hurrah!

I have just made home made soup with parsnip and parmesan bread, lentils and salmon and mango cream jelly for dessert.........stuffed! Sod the diet I'm marathon training!! image)

Well done Hash image  Fab times too.  You should be well pleased with that.

I find my knee objects to any camber too and I do a funny hoppy run if I have to corner left (dodgy left knee) to compensate.  Looks very proficcient image

Seren - I agree with Hash.  Its hard on your body to run after you've been sick.  If yesterday was the first day you've eaten properly then there is no way you'll have your reserves even vaguely full. Sounds horrid though.  Hope you're feeling better now.

  • Options

Really pleased to hear about your run Hash, that's great news, and an excellent run PipG.

Seren as Pinkerbelle says there's now way I could go that fast, as I proved today, probably just the result of your bug.

A real eye opener for me today in the HM.  I now know my limits and they are not where I thought they were!  Plan today was to aim for 9:54 pace.  10 min pace for 10 miles and then push on for the last 3.  Didn't work like that.  Set off 10 min miling no problem whatsoever, felt really good.  After 5 - 6 miles felt I was starting to flag despite gel at 3 miles.  Approaching 7 mile point after a short sharp hill I just died on my feet.  1st 6 miles were at 10 pace, miles 7-9 at 10:50 pace and then last miles at 11:50 pace!  I was just in survival mode then!  Had to resort to walking in places.  I have never been as close to giving up in a race as I was today.  Don't why this happened, other than I didn't drink as much water as I normally do

But I am not downhearted, it made me realise that I am only as quick as I think I am over shorter distances.  I do not yet have the stamina for long efforts, and just need to modify my targets.  During the race I even considered (briefly) not doing the marathon at all, but know I will hate myself for it.   Failure is not an option!

Would still love to do under 5 hours, and think this will be my primary target, but may have to accept that even this is too ambitious.  The important thing to me is to get round and enjoy it, like I enjoyed the 1st half of the race today.   Not many people run a marathon, we are special here, so it is still a massive achievement, no matter how long it takes.

Another comedy moment today:  At the 7 mile hill I was running with 2 older ladies and they were chatting to me ( I could only grunt!).  As I started to flag going up the hill one of the ladies grabbed my bum and pushed me up the hill!  image. She said she thought I needed some help - LOL. 1st time I've been accosted by a lady in many a year and I was too shattered to respond!

LMAO!!! - Literally Scuba - that is sooooo funny!! But well done on the HM - this is about YOU and YOUR medal at the end of it, the time is just a bonus image

Hash - Woo Freakin Hooo!!  Need to do a few of these imageimageimageimageimage

Well done to EVERYONE on their HM or their LSRs. Hoping that the bugs and illnesses we are suffering are as a result of the appalling weather and will clear as the sun comes out. We had SO much snow again last night that I cancelled my LSR, I just cant run in the snow -  BUT three hours later it was glorious sunshine so we took off to the lakes and did a LSR. Got covered in mud where the snow melted and my poor trainers look like muddy XC ones nut other than that, its all  good!

Got a mini break in Chichester Fri-Sun, so gonna do a LSR on Wednesday instead and with the speedwork on Tuesday and run on Thursday both at the club, I'm hoping to get a few miles in the bag without feeling guilty.

    Happy running xxx

Decided it was time my newest shoes got grubby today but hadn't bargained for the fact that in Stowe Gardens I could easily have worn off road shoes the paths were so muddy!

I've been finding everything except the parkruns quite a slog for the last couple of weeks, those 5Ks have been the thing reassuring me that I can find some speed.  Todays long run was lovely!  i'd have been quite happy to do 11+ mm but in fact the splits came out like this and I felt comfortable image

    1) - 1m - 11:12(11:12/m) - 102cal
    2) - 1m - 11:13(11:13/m) - 106cal
    3) - 1m - 10:35(10:35/m) - 106cal
    4) - 1m - 10:56(10:56/m) - 105cal
    5) - 1m - 10:25(10:25/m) - 103cal
    6) - 1m - 10:29(10:29/m) - 106cal
    7) - 1m - 10:29(10:29/m) - 105cal
    8) - 1m - 10:25(10:25/m) - 102cal
    9) - 1m - 10:34(10:34/m) - 100cal
    10) - 1m - 10:14(10:14/m) - 103cal
    11) - 1m - 10:31(10:31/m) - 102cal
    12) - 1m - 10:20(10:20/m) - 106cal

Planning for 15+ next week before racing 10 the week after

Bridget - those times are GREAT! Do you have a Garmin - is that how you get the splits etc? I'm so intrigued by everyones ability to do this!! I have NO idea what my times are etc - I just run, sometimes faster, sometimes slower - have no real idea what my paces are!

I've had a 405 for about 18 months and love it.  I've got it set so that it shows me the overall average pace which gets updated each mile as well as the time i've been running for.  OH was offering to buy me one for a while and I eventually gave in (I worry about large purchases - at the moment he is wanting to buy me some Uggs).
  • Options

Wow - what a hubby! Reckon a Forerunner is much better than any Uggs - a friend has had two pairs ruined in less than a year and hers cost £125 a pair!!

I was saving up for a Forerunner  305 as Sweatshop had them for about £125 - so trying hard!!

  • Options
What ruined them?  The ones I like are more than that as they are the latest model, the previous incarnation of the same style are £90 cheaper!
  • Options

Wow!! I dont think hers had particularly hard bottoms and she had the knotted type that bobbled up and kept catching on things!

She did say they kept her feet so warm hence why she went and bought another pair!

  • Options

SB get the UGGS!!!!!! I dithered and didn't see the attraction or value for money. In the end my daughter brought me some back from America and they are never off my feet! (Had them over 12mths now)I so totally get the attraction now and am saving up for some new ones image

    Anyway .....running......

Brilliant runningimage Hash impressive pace, well done image

SB Fab pacing and how good are you doing the first 2 slower to warm up properly. Really well done.

Scuba thats still a fab time for your HM. The first 6miles showed your capable of that pace and all the endurance work coupled with some faster runs will get you at that pace for longer. Well done image

I had a major wobble while on LSR today and thoughts about not being able to get round the marathon!!!!!! image But having just speed read and caught up on here (sorry if missed commenting on anyones major achievement) I've given myself a slap and readjusted the thinking! image

    My LSR went like this:

Woke up to snow covered world and rolled over as thought any running would be impossible and had nightmare about doing 17miles on dreadmill!!!!!!!
Mid morning came and it looked like the snow covering was dispersing so got my stuff on and headed out after bowl of porridge!
Pavement slightly slippy so very careful. First half milejust concentrating on staying up! Then 2 miles uphill running on the road as that was clearer. 3mile point and tried to convence my tired legs and body that I only had 14miles to go!!!
It was at the 7mile point when I seriously said to self "What are you doing??? Your legs are tired now and you think you can carry on for 10 more miles?" Worryingly I also answered myself "You can do it. Go on girl!"
At 10miles I momentarily felt better and thought "Oh yes!!!"
At 13miles I sternly told myself that "Hash would love to be running 17miles-so whats your problem?"
At 14miles I was 1mile from home and had to go away from home to get the extra miles........"Home or go the distance???"
I took the turning for.......the extra miles!!!! These last miles were long uphill followed by short sharp desent-don't know which was harder!!
Running along the last half mile I spotted my parents walking on the other side of the road. Grinning stupidly I waved and announced "17miles in the bag!" They waved and cheered back and do you know what I got an extra spring back in my step! Thats what a bit of support does for you!

Anyway 17miles all done. Harder than I thought it would be but everything seems to be!!! 2hrs 55mins so considering how I felt was very pleased with that image

Back to positive thinking now! Thinking of everone on the forum got me through so big BIG thanks to you all!image

These looked to have pretty sturdy soles and were leather.

I am lucky in Mr Sparkly but things weren't always like this with money and could still go the other way again.  He wants to buy stuff while we can just in case

    Wahoo fantastic, go Lizimageimageimage

Great running Kim and Bridget, really chuffed to hear you both had good 'uns

SR and Relaxed - what a pair of heroes you two are.   It was tough and lonely and freezing, but you both gritted your teeth and did what you'd set out to do.  That's what this is all about, and very well done.  This is bloody tough for all of us, in different ways and with different individual short-term goals, even if we've all got that same one big goal in sight on 25th April.  Somewhere along the road, we've all had doubts, and I don't know about the rest of you, but hearing that and knowing that it's tough for everyone at different times really helps overcome our own doubts.  Here's to all mentally squeezing SR's bum when we need a bit of motivation!

Had a bit of a tough night with various bits keeping me awake shouting objections, but gifted Gary will fix me later on.  More to the point, last week's runs total nearly 20 miles, and that's real progress.  Not back on plan, but far more than I could have imagined a couple of weeks ago

    On-on and upwards

Hash: Mega well done for your long run, some miles banked! I am going to have a look at the RW plan to day and see when it looks like we can jump on to it!

SN: You will not feel great after a tummy upset you need some days rehydrating and eating, and start with some short low intense runs until you feel your mojo back again!

I won Wokingham but boy i forgot how much it hurt! Lots of work for me to do!

    Well done Liz! image

I'd be pretty torn on the Garmin vs Boots question - I love both of mine.  We've had 3 different Garmins with different issues with all of them.  The 405 is lovely to wear, but hopeless in the dark, when you are wearing long sleeves.  301 is quite bulky, 305 less so, but still more bulky than the 405.  Its all about the money, I reckon.

BUT - I'd go for FitFlop Mukluk boots, rather than Uggs.  Getting mine for Christmas coincided with my knee getting a lot better and I'm definately aware of how much better my posture is when wearing them and how well my feet are supported.  And they are deliciously toasty, warm and comfy.

    And pretty image

Interesting on the boot front Wotsit, will look at those when ready to make a purchase image

And interesting info re garmins. I've never had one and although have thought about getting one am always put off by having to choose one. So good to have the thoughts of someone who has had all of them!!!!!image

  • Options

I bought myself a 305 back in 2006 then hubby got me a 405 about a year ago when he got into running so he could have my 305.  After a couple of weeks I asked him to swap with me so i could have the 305 back!!  Although more bulky than the 405 I find it easier to use and the large display means you can easily have and see 4 readouts at once - I have time elapsed, time of day, distance in miles and m/m pace.  I love it!!  I think the Uggs are fab too though but would opt for the garmin as you will get sooooooo much use out of it now especially in mara training and it will soon be spring (she says very optimistically!!) and the uggs won't get worn as much.

Scuba that is hilarious about that lady shoving your bum up the hill!!  Well done on your half you did great and still ages to go before the marathon so you will improve your endurance heaps between now and then.

Relaxed that was a brilliant lsr report and a total inspiration - thank you!  Going to be keeping your approach in mind when I am out on my 17 miler this coming weekedn especially as I may be on my lonesome!

Sparkly great running, great pace.  Fab running everyone else and WELL DONE LIZ!!!

    Morning all!!

Well done Liz, Scuba Runner, Relaxed!  And anyone else I've misssed out!

    Great running Hash!!!

Well I can honestly say that anything that is thrown at me between now and April 25th can not be as soul destorying as the half marathon yesterday- although i ABSOLTUELY loved loved loved it!!!!!

Sussex Beacon half marathon- wet, soggy and cold from the start but I managed to fall into pace pretty soon, but just as I managed that we ground to a halt as we were going up a narrow little hill- not ideal but hey ho!  Hit the town part of the race and it was really tough as it was narrow and had bollards everywhere, and as we were still bunched up ou could see them until you were on top of them.

Managed to survive that and headed down hill towards the prom- which was the most awlful part of any run I have ever experienced, we were wet, I couldn't feel my legs but saw my mum, dad and boyfriend (bless them for standing in the torrential rain!) but i'd shoved my gloves down my waistband so htrew them at my mum- BIG mistake as soon as I hit he the bottom promenade, with nothing between us runners and the sea except the wind boy was that cutting- except the hail!  Oh my god it was awlful, everyone started walking but i just put my head down and thought if I coudl power through and eventually turn the corner the wind would be behind me......  But it was hard!

I finshed in 2.18 which is a new PB imageimage think I might've been able to go quicker had it not been for those heliish hailing 3 miles but I'm still pretty chuffed..... extremely chuffed!!!!!

  • Options
Great going Vik - that is SUCH a tough race and course - I did it before my first marathon in 2006 (was my first ever race) and we had hail and hills and wind and that stretch along the sea front is real character building stuff isn't it - you just see an expanse of road ahead of you and it never seems to get any nearer!  Well done!
