I agree with what others have said above. Yes what she did is wrong and animal cruelty such as this is abhorrent but compared to other world events, such as the Pakistan floods, it's not really news is it?
Compared to the instances of animal cruelty I've seen in the course of my day job this is pretty low end. It's wrong, she shouldn't have done it but I don't see that it's that newsworthy. We came to the conclusion that it was because she was a middle aged woman (your architipal 'cat' person) rather than a gang of chav scum.
Actually I thought the reason it made the news wasn't so much over what she did, but the types of technology involved to "capture" her, i.e. the initial filming via private CCTV, then to utilise Facebook to find out who she is etc.? No?
Interesting point Nam. It was why it made the news that we were chatting about rather than the actual incident which didn't really seem newsworthy at all.
I had the same thoughts about it being a hoax but couldn't work out who would benefit from setting such a thing up unless the cat is going to sign up for the next reality TV show.
I don't like cats that much. Murderous little f*ckers.
But they don't deserve to be shoved in wheelie bins.
The amount of outrage shouts, "slow news week" as much as anything else.
There has been plenty of stuff going on lately; Aussie elections; human rights abuses in the Congo; bus hijack in Manila; miners in Mexico; all the crap going on here with the economy; floods in Pakistan..... Are we so used to such scenes of devastation that no-one gives a toss, but a mistreated cat gets the blood boiling?
Some folk seem to get totally OTT about stuff though, and relish any opportunity to get on their high horse. Now shoving a cat in a bin is totally unacceptable, and the woman should be prosecuted, but for all those folk that jump on the bandwagon to see who can shout the loudest, calling for her death etc??? WTF is that about? Completely disproportionate reaction. Such folk would be better spent investing their emotions in to something useful, rather than threats. Not that they'd have to balls to confront that women anyway I bet!!
Lee I totally agree with you. I like cats, I have one myself, but sadly I think you're right that people look at what happens in "far away places" like Pakistan, Mexico, Congo etc with mild curiosity and a vague "isn't it awful" whilst eating their dinner, but somehow manage to get really seriously emotional and angry about this injustice and cruelty to the cat (who's probably forgotten all about it by now).
the thing about this is that everyone wants to believe that we live in a lovely safe nice bubble.............and anything that goes againgst our idea of a proper civilised country boils the blood...............like the drunk student urinating at a war memorial brought out calls for hanging that usually accompanies paedeophiles.....
We can protend that horrible things happen around the world happen because these places aren't "civilised" so it couldn't happen to us......
The miners are in Chile, Lee, but other than that, good point.
British news values are such that the 3rd week of devatastation in Pakistan is "not that newsworthy" but "Katie's latest ultimatum to Alex" apparently is.
If you could prove the cat had been put in the wheelie bin as part of the ongoing MI5 plot to cover up the murder of Princess Diana, then it would be a perfect double bubble.
I was at the gym last night watching Sky News - that was all the news I got last night - and didnt have headphones on - so from my understanding of what I saw -

It never did Top Cat any harm...
It's such a strange story that it smacks of a hoax that's gone wrong...
...but then I suppose there are all sorts of weirdos in the world.

I wonder if it will form part of a revamped Dr Seuss Trilogy
The cat in the hat
The cat in the wheelie bin
The cat with the rat
