.... i'm hoping Bolton is better than it looks/sounds but i plan to rise from the dead in time to join in the Henley festivties as a full fledged pirate
I've been to Bolton, in fact my family come from there. Gastank, I'd say that you shouldn't hold up your hopes. It's famous for the being the cradle of the Industrial Revolution in Victorian times, years of neglect, and the upsurgent home of the BNP. (Or is that Oldham?).
The only two things I remember about Henley are that they don't do Tri when it's peak season, because they're rowing. And the race reports from the tri had all the racers hanging onto the pontoon trying not to get swept down the Thames at the start.
Gastank - all I can say about Bolton is the Landlord form local is from there, he raves about it, he's a huge Bolton football fan, he was the first person ever to get married at the Reebok (football stadium) - he wouldn't have a word said about the place, thinks its great, the dog's bolloxs.......but he lives down here, five miles from Henley....speaks for itself really
I am thinking Lanza if I do Ironman next year. The problem (for me) with a late summer race is that you lose all of the social opportunities that come with summer because of training.
That said though I like the idea of Lanza and Henley , so do my credit card suppliers!
Just had another look at the race information for Challenge Vichy. The bike profile is fantastic - looks like a sharp climb followed by 90k rolling downhill, and repeat! And it's the weekend of my 40th birthday.......and it's in France.
With it being a river swim - I guess there's a chance of Henley being a duathlon if rain is heavy ? Like Windsor was this year ? It's unlikely but possible ?
Cougie - It was the first time in 22 years that they had to cancel the swim at Windsor, so its pretty unlikely for Henley, but always possible I guess.
as Raf says, yes it's possible they could cancel the swim but it's unlikely we'll get 2 years like this! (crosses fingers). the Thames is wider up at Henley so any current would be slower which will help.
the other problem at Windsor was also water quality - lots of field wash off so loads of debris and of course livestock "manure" which doesn't help. water quality is an important thing that's also taken into account - a few swims have been cancelled in the past due quality issues caused be faecal matter or blue-green algae.

But what do I know?
Personally, I'm eyeballing IM Wales. 2013.

There's another sign! I found a holiday book in our house, open at Lanzarote.
Stick to Wales Blisters, that gives you two summers and one winter to get ready !
Can I officially retire before I start?
I will be spectating at Vichy. Will help with a feed station as long as du vin and du pain is okay.
Ooooh, it's officially Henley now
Doorstep Challenge!
Are we having a new pirate award for turning up to both championship races. If so, how about the longest joint time gets the aard
Most definitely OC

I have a feeling that award may be mine already

And I think there's a relay for anyone having a year off the long stuff. **wheedle**
and it will be warm
Henley in September is not very appealing weather wise
It would be more of a shock to the system to race in nice weather though surely?? We're more conditioned to drizzle wind and hail!
A nice flat bike and lovely sun
I still fancy Vichy..... Just to watch
henley in september 2013 - 22 degrees if think........
Ok, think I've got permission from the boss to do Vichy half and Henley full next year.
IF the boss can sort there knee out I think i might be able to brain wash her into joining in.
Mind you given how fast she is she might already be back in the uk by the time I finish vichy if go for it.

Vichy was in the 40's last year and a non wetsuit swim. Road quality is also not that great apparently so bike isnt as fast as profile suggests
