What I think concerns some people (and me) is that now that you've got a 'badge' people with pressurise you to deal with posts that aren't spam but offend them in some way.
The remit is clear. All we've been asked to do is mark certain types of post as spam, this hides them from the forum view so that people can log in and use the forum as they'd expect.
The types of spam are:
Chinese spammers selling fake goods.
Gif files containing copies of previous posts with a gif file added at the end.
People using the forum to sell items or services not related to running or linking to escort services.
It's nothing to do with threads / posts deemed offensive - if anyone thinks it is, then I'll just point them politely in the direction of RW Towers.
Spam Womble sounds good to me - forget the badge, we could wear the costume.
I think the spam wombles are a good idea. I do think though that they're wasting their breath trying to explain what they've been asked to do, as some people are never going to just get over it and move on to something else. Their remit seems abundantly clear to me, and I think if they're happy to do it, then fab.
I can't believe how much fuss is being made about this!
All they can do is hide obvious spam - what is wrong with that? If they are happy to do it for free, why do others care?
People volunteer for all sorts of things - coaching kids at sports, visiting lonely people in hospital, teaching adults to read and write. Should they not do so unless they are paid?
I guess the people fussing most are those who weren't asked!
I've read this thread - and the other one and I just don't believe what I'm reading!
There's been a lot of nonsense on the forum over the years but this takes the biscuit!
There are other fora where there are clearly identified moderators - and they moderate to the nth degree, ensuring that posters follow the clear guidelines for posting. They also shift posts from one thread to another if it's more appropriate.
I tried making this point previously. The place is a mess; we don't just need moderators for getting rid of spam. Everything needs keeping tidy, eg. multiple threads on exactly the same subject, time after time. I'm sure this contributes to the search option being close to useless. The best forum I go on has some massive debates; everyone knows the score and users are often given cool off weeks/months from the mods. What are people really worried about, it's as if the people complaining have never used a public forum before....give your heads a shake.
Blimey Mr Boat - just look at the kick off aboout deleting Spam.
Imagine if someone were given the power to cull the 4987 threads on "can i race with an ipod" and the 2431 threads on "can my heart go higher than my max ?"
I'm glad I keep to one or two threads, I seem to have missed the arguments & disagreements which suits me just fine
I only know Meldy out of the new prefects, & she has given me some tip top advice over the few years I've been running & been on here.....and she's never got annoyed at me wittering and mithering Although she did bully me into doing a marathon......
But as I've started training for my 4th I guess I'd better drop that !!
Mr B - As a Liverpool fan who's seen your running thread over there, I think I know which forum you're talking about. The user mods there have god like powers but keep the place useable, porn free and free from litigation.

Seren. save your breath.
I'm wondering which womble each one would be.
Meldy = Madame Cholet?

I like the idea of Meldy as Madame Cholet Spam Womble

The world would surely end.
cougie: you're forgetting the 'best running jacket' every time it rains thread(s).
LtP: ;0) sorry if I haven't read all the thread properly; I'm not SG but looks like we're thinking along the same lines.

In comparison this change seems minuscule.
I've always viewed Meldy as a somewhat authoratitive grandmotherly type figure, I think she'll do a great job
Run! Run now!
(wonders how Holgs will cope with the swim whilst dealing with a 6 inch stilleto heel, buried in the back of his head)
If the stiletto heel hits his motor cortex, it might speed him up a bit
It would need more than a shoe to speed me up
I will be in disguise at the Outlaw, for my own protection.
The agents and the number of Madonna style close protection officers will make you stand out !!
Holgs, you need to write something dirty to get to the top of the Amazon bestseller list now. And I'm not talking about your bike
LB - I'll leave the "bored housewive porn" to someone else, I don't know anything about silk scarfs, feathers and paddles.
I'm going to employ some decoys in Nottingham.
