I'm not on the flight of doom going over there actually... I'm heading out a day earlier.
Will make sure I leave a heavy dent on the lounge bar before Barley gets there the morning afterwards!!

Is anybody hiring a car there, or think it would be worth it? Was thinking for me and a friend but don't know if we would really use it much
The airport is about 2 miles from the hotel. Taxis are 30 euros or you can get the bus for 1 euro.
I dont think a car is worth it - unless you're having an extended trip - if you're not doing race stuff you should be resting up. And the train station is right next to the hotel - so Monaco is 30 mins and a few euros away.
Indeed it is, however, based on my experience from last time I wouldn't spend 8 hours doing the touristy thing on the Friday before the race
The only thing I would really want a car for is to ride the descents on the Friday. But as my friend is also racing - I don't see how we could drive up and descend without having to ride back up again... not something I want to do just two days before race day.
I heard that Monaco was a quick/cheap trip away. Is it worth it one day?
Definitely but ideally not pre-race or close to raceday as it's a tad hilly if you walk up to the palace.
If you fancy the casino don't forget your passport
Also if you take €25 or something like you can be driven round the grand prix circuit in a Ferrari or similar from casino square.

You'd be better off viewing the run course in case you dont get that far
