We saw the 2007 event on television, and it looked pretty good, I think we've still got it somewhere if you want a copy. Someone we know did the 2008 race and recommended it. Plus Busselton and the surrounding area sound like a pretty nice place for a holiday.
The swim is out and around the pier, and the bike and run are pretty flat. Although the wind can get up through the day. There's a thread on TriTalk about IMWA where some people who have done it previously have posted their comments.
Aandersnog (you can find him on the IMNZ thread) has done it and spent last Christmas over there.
If you ever go over to tripe talk look for Free Willy, he lives in the area and has done the race too so can give all kinds of info.
I keep thinking about this one (Just keep it to the thinking stage Dave !)
I have loads of family in Perth WA, and could turn it into a holiday with free accommodation.....
Kanga, when will you be down there/thinking of doing one, ive forgotten?
Slummo/Jan - just read Rosey's blog - congratulations guys!
Hope we can meet up for a glass of something fizzy to celebrate in Busselton - when do you guys get there?
I looked at this instead of Nice for 2010.
The venue and course look absolutely great.
Travel costs and a young baby put an end to the idea though.
you singletons maybe able to afford it ... i can... got alot of saving to do.
Busselton is one of my favourite IMs and a great place for a family holiday or training camp. There's a good triathlon club there who welcome you to join their training rides and plenty of places to visit with the family. As Little N says, you'll need a car and ideally someone else who can drive so you cycle to the tourist spot/ice cream shop/winery in the countryside while they drive with the little ones (even better if they are teetotal and drive you home after lunch, hic!)
Contrary to popular opinion, the race is not flat - there is a slight dip in the run course at one point with a climb back up, I think it's nearly one metre high. OK, that's nearly flat! The bike is flat and if it's windy, you may be heading into the wind one way but you can sail downwind on the way back, so you'll spend a lot of time on the aerobars - flexibility training is good. The swim can be a bit rough at the far end of the pier (it's a mile out to sea) but it's still one of my favourite swims, plenty of fishies to watch too. There can be stingers (jellyfish) in late Dec/January - their sting is like nettle rash, not poisonous but not too much fun either - but usually there won't be any when the race is held in early Dec. The run leg is really well supported as it goes along the beach past cafes and holiday homes where people are having BBQs and beers while they watch you race.
210 - second honeymoon
LittleN - we have the car sorted too (hopefully)
aandersnog - I'm even more excited now!
It is Plum - Saurday at 0615hrs for us mortals.
Thanks for the good wishes, haven't seen Bendy and Slummo yet but met Russell for a coffee the other day - lovely chap.
Weather is good, forecast is for 29C and 20 - 27kph winds so not too bad if that's all we get. Locals are lovely, organisation seems good so far. Registered yesterday, racking tomorrow, parade and pasta party tonight.
Good Luck LMH and Mark!!!!!
Shall be looking in to see how you go.
Good luck
Body clock sorted but temperature rising by the day! Such is life - it will be the same for everyone.
Bit of a near disaster with my bike today but all sorted now thankfully, just got to relax, drink, eat, sleep and avoid the sharks and stingers in the morning!
So 8ish hour time difference. Hope you're all eating well and getting ready for a good night's sleep.
Should be able to catch the start this evening if imdead manages to get going. Busy tomorrow morning so may not be able to catch up again till after it's all over
Good luck and enjoy.
Good luck all, will be checking throughout the day, I think
Ah b*gger it's already started then. Just remembered someone who popped on the forums a bit a while ago is doing it and sent him a good luck, but will be too late, unless he swims with his blackberry..... my bad.
Looks like there's no irondead coverage till later
