Yep, if it's on (D is concerned it won't be on after the 70.3 debacle!)....I have sourced Hawaiian lager, leis, Hawaiian pizza...it's all good Gooooooo Barley! Oh and Crab and Fegan too. Goooo Pirates!
I remember meeting Carl for the first time in 2004 at Aldersley stadium for a LD bike recce. I remember him moaning about cold feet and bad circulation and walking into someones house to use the loo(he thought because the door was open it was a pub!)
From then on it's all been uphill, in an oarsum kind of way and he is an inspiration for anyone who wants to do IM or just achieve against popular opinion.
Good luck Barley, an original and the last remaining pirate!!
like Smiffy, I first met Barlos in 2004 at the Vit. I was on my 2nd lap of the run and he was on his 1st. as I came up behind him I knew this gangly overweight (pot, kettle etc!) bloke running like a crippled giraffe was him.
Vit 2008 (I think) was the first time I'd actually met any pirates. Arrived on site and almost the first person I saw was an unsveldt chap in a pirate top leaning on a fence smoking while chatting to someone else. Knew it could only be Barley.
2007 Big Woody, riding a mountain bike 5 feet in front of me during the marathon, with a couple of bottles of Heineken in the cages whilst waving a fag in front of me... I've hated him ever since
And collecting out bikes from transition at Nice this summer and so happy we had both survived again
First met having a fag under a tree half way round the Grim at Aldershot (him not me obviously!!) some years ago which I was running with Meldy..........she introduced me
Thanks for all the support, not really much to report, doing the touring the island thing at the moment. Staying off my feet, still trying to adjust from the long journey.
I first met Barley in Sept 2007 when I mistook him for a tramp as he was laying on a bench beside the canal with a fag in hand but he was actually taking a break mid-way through the JW Ultra.
Cant wait to hear your report from your adventure. I wonder if Kona will survive the Barley experience?
I met Barley at Garr's flat warming party in 2008.
I actually felt quite nervous about meeting this experienced and knowledgeable Ironman triathlete that I had seen give out so much advice on the forum. I had imagined a chiselled hard core fitness tri god. In walked Carl... I wasn't disappointed.

he's typified the pirate spirit since
bon chance in Kona Carl, you've earned it dude.
just be shit
Just avoid referring to it as "the big dance" in your race report. That would make you a twunt.

Best wishes Carl, I am sure it will be a great day out
didn't he get one of those pirate thongs
looking forward to the photos
I really hope not Seren ....
Not quite a thong, Seren, but the best I could do
You did a 10m TT in 2004 and the winner was 'Big' Ian Stannard - now a professional with Sky and former GB national champ.
So he only marginally beat you then - and I expect great things in Kona ! Kick that bikes ass !
