Ed, why don't you plot the splits from Draycote there, if you can remember them, up to the marathon point. At Draycote you started conservatively, having never run the distance before so you were able to maintain that pace at least to the marathon point.
A lot of my stories start with " so you see.. i have this friend..." but don't have anything to do with ru**ing. There was this friend with a pickle jar.......
2 possibles - 1 - the weather, too hot? 2 - You are a natural short distance runner - what are your 5k or even mile times like?
The other alternative may be you just had a bad day, maybe a virus or something, happens to us all. I ended up in the St Johns ambulance at the Stamford 18 - felt slightly rough before the race but nothing too bad, just got steadily worse during it.
That 5 mile time is similar to my pb which was one month before doing a 3'09 marathon but the 5k is slower than mine from that era but if it was at the end of a tri it shouldn't be compared.
You've (sorry you're friend's) got the pace, so probably some longer runs with some time spent at a realisitc "marathon" pace. Maybe race some half marathons as well. And meanwhile start off more conservatively in the marathons. Keep running them, they'll make you stronger.
Comments
Its possible that lack of carbs/fluids may have contributed to inability to maintain pace.
Possible that lack of long runs may have contributed too.
But looking at how early the pace starts to fall, i'd guess that the major factor is simply going too fast.
ccos stratty-you did well
i would think about base training

What are the times like for a Half ?
It seems not too bad really up to half way - although there's no settling in period at the beginning - just going off a bit too fast.
Prob a mix of overambitious at the start, and not doing enough long runs ?
Benz probably has it right - do more base work - which is equivalent to long runs.
they were both hot races.
no splits for draycote 35, but was 3:50 to marathon which was pretty flat sub9min.
half marathon time is 1:32.
I think it's just the long run thing.
How many 20 milers did 'your friend' do ?
jan: 17.5 & 23(off road)
feb: draycote 35
mar: half mara. & 20
apr: 21 3 weeks out from stratford
none in 3 week gap between.
mind you, I didn't see the Llamas either.

seems odd ed
what are your times like for the long runs
pstttt-you doing potts
5 miles is the shortest distance he's run.. well.. raced in 32mins.. on no hang on there was that 5k at the end of a tri in 21mins.
not doing anything at the moment, thinking of taking up bobsleigh.
thats it
