That's what I'm thinking Sazza G ... saturday morning in the woods with trail shoes and a large flask of tea for afterwards!

Did a tester on the road early this morning in the snow and it felt good, so went out with the neighours to the trails. While they (adults and children) enjoyed sleighing down the slopes, I trugged along in a foot-deep snow for 3.8 miles before doing some hill reps (6 x 150m approx) stopping for recovery watching the others sleighing down slopes. Hard workout but most enjoyableimage

Dropped my car off for an MOT and then did a 6.75 mile detour back home, taking in the canal between Rodley and Newlays on the way.  Some big climbs coming out of the valley which were tough in the deep snow ... but worth it for the views. Absolutely beautiful out in the country side. Canal was mostly frozen and covered in snow ... with lots of footprints left by the ducks/geese/swans (but thankfully not runners).

    6.75 miles, 1:01:23, 9:06 min/mile, 144 bpm avHR.

6 miles hilly was on my schedule for today so I kitted up with the new Aldi ski thermals (Brill) & offroaders & headed along the main road & back.

Snow was about 5 inches at the sides when I had to jump out of the way of the few cars but I soon learnt to cross over rather than do that because they sprayed me with slush if I stayed on their side....

Was snow flurry as I left & a little blizzard like at about 3 miles but otherwise sunny & toasty in my thermals.

Sounds beautiful, Dr. Dan - glad you're back on the run image

0645  Last night's hard frost had turned a 2 in. layer of snow into sheet ice, so it was on with the Felldancers and my head torch.  Tiptoed the 100 yds over the road to Victoria Park and ran laps of the largest fields there.  Uncompacted snow made a sound surface but had to take care with frozen ridges underneath.

    Happy New Year All image

First run of the year, although I'm supposed to be resting my foot/ankle, but yesterday it took me 2 hrs to get home from work and I wasn't going to do that again today, so dedcided to walk in.

But coming home I decied to run. It's only 3.43 miles (30:50 - 9 m/m) and luckily theres are grass verges nearly all the way, so I kept to them and was running in my fell shoes so was in control, a few slips as I crossed the few minor roads that still had some ice on. All the other roads are pretty much fine now so will be back in the car tomorrow.

    Easy Run - 4.7 miles in 38:00 (8:05/mile)

Back in St Andrews, so I went along the beach. Not the easiest run ever, the sand wasn't totally frozen so I was getting some resistance which is good, but it was so cold. Averaged 76% MHR and peaked at 84%. The HR was slightly above what I wanted, but my breathing was fine so as long as that's ok then I'm happy. I just wanted to get outside.

    3.8 miles in 30 minutes

Back on the treadmill this morning for a hilly fartlek run. I ran 3 x 1/2 miles intervals flat at 6:58 pace. Interspersed with 2 x 1/2 miles at 3 & 4% gradients, running at 7:30 pace. Not too difficult but I have only done a few of these and intend to build up speed and distance. Finished with more strength and core work. I am planning to attend a core training class and circuit training tomorrow. Then looking forward to my long run on Sunday which I will be doing outside no matter what.

MLR ... 4.2 miles in 40:09 at 140 bpm avHR. 7th run of the year and the 2nd run in trainers ... cadence a good 15-20 step per minute lower than when I've been wearing the VFFs ... but much less frost-bite. image

Goodness me it's cold..... was trying to do up my garmin when the neighbour called me bonkers & said it was -10.

Set off intending to do about 3 but felt OK at 1.5 so added another 0.5 & turned it into a 4 mile.

Hardest parts were the uphills as didn't want to get too breathless & have to inhale too deeply!! Lungs feel like they are still frozen & my face is numb.

-9 deg. C on Merseyside at 7am and I repeated yesterday's laps in the park as the only rational option.  The snow's more rutted now and I ought to have worn my head torch but I got the miles in imageA big 'Well done!' to everyone else who did too!

4M in Minus 7 this morning up here in West Of Scotland.

Pathways still generally are like ice-rinks, so again ran off-road.

    Quite enjoyed being out though.

    Easy run - 4.69 miles in 39:15 (8:22/mile)

Went slower than yesterday to keep the heart rate down. Still as snowy as yesterday and slippy in places. Averaged 73% MHR and peakded at 80%. Aside from that, nothing much to say, aside from a bitter wind.

Just been reading a few posts to try to motivate myself to go for run number 8 of the year ... it did the trick but, alas, I just ate my lunch so it will have to be later! image

Well, I did get out for the 8th run in 8 days ... same route as yesterday. 4.2 miles, 38:25. Blisters on insteps are killing me ... weird considering how short my runs have been. It's the danged snow I tell thee! May have to wear the VFFs tomorrow for some relief ... but then it'll be frostbite!image

Hello everyone and happy new year to you all.

I've just been catching up a bit on the thread.  Those shoes look wicked DD.  Do they give you a better grip in the snow/ice?

I'm afraid I've been a bit of a whimp and just settled for the treadmill for the past week.  I managed a run outside with Shelley on sunday but that's the last time I've been out.  It's really icy round here and I'm really concerned about injuring myself  during my training for Paris.

However, tomorrow I'm going to see if I can get some fell shoes and try going off road.  Is the sand Ok to run on Swittle? If so I might suggest going to Lytham and running along the beach.

Hello, katb.  Good to read your post.  I'm a firm fan of beach running: flat, even and firmer towards the high tide mark.  The rippled areas are to be avoided, however.  Liverpool's coastline v. rarely freezes solid but this is as intense and long lasting as I can recall in 16 years.  Only feature to avoid would be compacted snow or ice over the sand.  What shoes do you have in mind?  Inov8 are v. popular over on FETCH.

I've never bought fell shoes so I'm open to suggestions.  I'll take a look at the Inov8, thanks Swittle.

Hi, Katb.  Here's a link: Inov* specialises in trail, fell & mountain running.  If you wanted to stay more local Walsh has been keeping fell runners uprigt for many years - Bolton-based, I think.

Swittle, I've been to the sweatshop this morning and tried the inov8 but whilst they were Ok, the fit at the front of my foot was a bit too slack so I bought some salomon ones which had a bit more support (I overpronate).  I'm going to try them out tomorrow so I'll let you know how I go on with them.

No running last couple of days, not risking a fallimage - cross training today, 10mins warm up on the eliptical machine and then 3 sets 5 x 45secs of speed intervals on the bike, cool down on 10mins on the bike.

Hyde Park, 10 miles or so this morning, round the frozen snowy paths, in prep for my first half marathon in 4 weeks time. A few icy patches but the paths were generally well gritted and the grass was lovely and compacted with snow. The wind was definitely the worst part - my lips and cheeks feel burnt! LOADS of runners around though, couldn't believe there were so many others dragging themselves out in the middle of a snow storm (or something of the sort) at 8.30am on a Saturday!! My muscles ache as if I've run a marathon!

Welcome, Shrimpy!  That sounds like a really good session. image

Katb, I've heard good things about Salomon too and I wouldn't be without trail shoes these days, regardless of the snow.

4pm  Terrific, fiery sunset over the Welsh hills and a chance to escape from the confines of the park.  Walked the half mile to the fields skirting the promenade and set off  on the snowbound grass with nothing as much as a slip.  Stopped to chat to one of the mysterious people who run before dawn - she asked me about trail shoes too!

At the Coastguard Station, I took to the trails by the golf course, turning back near Hightown and, leaving the path, I ran 2 miles to the end of the beach and headed home via the Marina path, fields and side roads. During this, I heard a strange whirring noise, not loud enough for a plane and, stopping, I saw a couple of hundred geese heading for the sea - the noise was their wings beating!

Swittle the beach sounds like a good surface in this weather & scenic too!

Thought I'd bring my LSR forward a day in case it snows overnight so set off for a 7miler.

Miss-calculated (or garmin under recorded) so had to double back a few times, roads were clear so stuck to those mainly with a few stretches on the pavement when cars went by but hard going on the snow.

    10.1 miles in 1h 18 m (7:43/mile)

Despite my bravado earlier this week and after some sensible persuasion from my wife, I opted for the treadmill at the gym. I also read about the injuries sustained in the past 3 weeks, especially the runner who dislocated her shoulder and is out of action for 12 weeks. It also looks like a thaw may begin towards next weekend and I would have kicked myself if I had got injured for the sake of a week.

The treadmill was not as bad as I feared and I varied the run with inclines and fast stride intervals. I don't think I could have coped with slow running on it. I am pleased with my decision and delighted to get some decent miles in. I also broke in my new Nike Pegasus trainers that I bought for 26 quid yesterday in the sale. Stay safe everyone and all being well we can look forward to improved conditions next week. image

I went out for a very slow, steady 4 miles in the ice and snow today.  Honestly, 4 miles was enough in these conditions.  My thighs were certainly feeling it.  I then ventured to the gym to finish off another 3 and a half on the treadmill.
