    Poor you, just seen this! Can you still do your body combat you love though? And pump, and attack and all the other things you are great at? image

    I have dodgy knees/hamstring and had a similar conversation with my physio. He said that by the time I'm 40 I'll really need to reassess how much I am doing because the way I'm built isn't really suited to long-distance running. For now though, I have stretches/exercises and really good trainers to minimise the damage and if things get bad I have acupuncture.

    well I'm 60 and have run since I was 11, stretching and strength work have helped me over the years to be able to keep going.

    I can't rave enough about stretching.  I never used to do it, and have been running for years.  I was an accident waiting to happen.

    Surprise, surprise, I've ended up with a list of injuries - nothing major, thankfully I was lucky, but a big warning.   I'm now seeing an osteo, who has givem me a ticking off and a series of exercises stretches to do twice a day.  The difference is phenomenal!

    STB - I've been running 6 years now without any problems with the ultimate goal of doing the London marathon.  I've finally got a place for next year and have just started to have knee and achilles problems.  Apparently I've got one leg longer than the other, my foot turns in and this is causing the knee pain.  I'm seeing a sports podiatrist rather than a physio and she's made me temporary insoles for my running shoes which have now properly aligned my hips, knees and feet.  I've got stretches and strengthening exercises to do to and am not allowed to run for a month at present until my injuries calm down.  I wouldn't accept being told you're not built to run - I'd suggest geting an opinion from a sports podiatrist and trying insoles to properly align your body.  I'm never gonna win any races but just having this little amount of time off has shown me how important running is to my general health, happiness and well being.  Don't give up.

    I'd not thought of seeing a podiatrist, WCD, will definitely look into that. I wonder whether I can do that on the NHS? It would probably take a while to get a referral, but would be cheaper! image Good luck with the London marathon by the way! That was (is...) my goal... maybe one day!

    Bunches - the physio also told me to cut back on my classes image Apparently I'm 'allowed' to do one combat class a week as a 'treat'... pump is a no-no (according to the dear old fizz) - since weight bearing is the problem (even just standing, I'm loading my knees wrongly) then adding extra weight isn't too clever. Sod it though, I'm not going to stop everything I like doing - I'm just planning on dropping the weight I take on the leg tracks in pump, and I have no intention of cutting back on combat image

    Hash - I do lots of stretching. I didn't when I first started - soooo much stiffness and aches the next day! But I've got into a pretty good routine now. I think my hamstrings are quite tight though, so I might try yoga or pilates or something a bit more focused on sorting them out.

    You know, between the lot of us we give cracking good advice when we want to.  I've just had a read back, picked up a few good pointers for me too.

    Just thinking how far we've shifted from the dispair of the original doom and gloom from Sarah's physio.

    Re podiatrist - don't want to be bearer of bad news, but be careful. 

    I was referred to one who was awful.  I wear custom made orthotics and this particular pod had a pair made but instead of arranging a fitting, she had them sent to my home address.  They were wrong for a number of reasons but when I told her she told me to ring the suppliers and discuss this with them myself.

    I declined on the grounds that I'm not qualified  and asked for a fitting.  She told me to return the orthotics to her saying that she would contact me.

    She didn't. 

    6 weeks later, no news (and no fitting) and when I finally managed to get hold of her, I discovered that she had disposed of the orthotics.  She said this had an "expensive mistake" but that if I wanted some orthotics, she could try a different supplier, but would have to charge me again - for exactly the same appointments that I'd already had and paid for.  I'd lost all faith in her by then, so told her that I would need to make alternative arrangements.

    This whole mess took over 6 months, from my first appointment to finally getting some answers from her. 

    I've now got a brilliant pod - who managed to get me 2 new pairs of orthotics and my own pair refurbished within 4 weeks.image

    If you can find a pod who is recommended by physio/running shop/runners, then hopefully, you'll be OK.  You want to make sure they specialise in biomechanical stuff, I think that my "bad pod" was more of a chiropodist than a biomechanical specialist.

    Ta very muchly for all of the advice. I am much more positive now image All set for my run tomorrow (5K around a lake in Milton Keynes in aid of Bowel Cancer UK) and then off to uni on Monday. Will definitely hunt down a running club and see if I can get some advice and some pointers on podiatrists/sports physios in the area. Although I think I will try the NHS route for the pod. Hopefully will get referred to a good 'un!

    However, if you already have degenerative changes in your knees, I'd be more careful and maybe consider more non-weight bearing exercise like swimming or cycling. Not to say don't run, but run with caution and cross-train. 

    I always tell my arthitis patients that they must keep active, rather than taking to their chairs - helps in the long run, innit.

    So - in conclusion....come over to the Dark Side. You know you want to image
