Yep - i was leafing through that in my local Waterstone's at the weekend.

I'll have a look for the Tony Attwood one too.

We have loads of students with various groups of letters(!) but very little training on the matter, which I think is pretty daft! I've had to dig most of it out myself or quiz the specialist tutors.

Until the work that schools that are pro SEN do is reflected accurately central govt, rather than these silly league tables, the nation as a whole will not fully come to terms with supporting kids with SEN.

Schools with good rep for helping SEN kids can quickly end up attracting more, which does affect league table positions. lower positions, incrased inspection and LEA pressure..

I am VERY pro SEN, but this is a real quandry.

It's a big problem, Barkles. Some of the most important outcomes are not measurable. There is no league table ranking to reflect the fact that when he was at a highly regarded prep school my son had to be chiselled out of bed every morning, whereas within weeks of starting at the special-measures school he was up and in his uniform by 6.30am and every day was a "favourite" day for one reason or another. The two littlest girls go to a school which is quite high up the league tables, but we didn't send their brother there because we know their special needs provision is poor.

The NHS has similar problems.

Agreed Sparkles - and it's not just SEN either.

I'm more proud of and happier to see some of the kids who slogged their guts out to get D's and E's at A level than the pretty much guaranteed A grade student.
